Switching from aromatase inhibitors to Tamoxifen due to toxicity

Posted by char81 @char81, Mar 19, 2022

Hello, my first post… I’ve been on AI’s for about a year now,and have developed severe hand pain and increased liver enzymes. In the last 3 months developed contracture in right hand. Have tried Femora and Aromasin. My oncologist says it’s time to get off them and move to Tamoxifen. I’m post menopausal and turning 69 this month. I do yoga twice a week and walk every day. Concerned about the increased risk of blood clots and uterine cancer. Any thoughts? I plan to discuss next week w my PCP. Thanks!

I am doing the reverse. I took tamoxifen for about 5 months and developed side effects that included pelvic pressure (endometrial thickening?), severe night leg cramps, knee and hip pain, general malaise, and finally pain in the back of one calf that can be a symptom of DVT. I took the pill in the evening--maybe morning would be better for the movement. My oncologist switched me to anastrazole (Arimidex), which I started this week. Like you, I practice yoga, and am generally very active.

I had the same situation and endometrial cancer does run in my family so my OBGYN is doing ultrasounds every 6 months to ensure I'm not getting that cancer. Both my mother and grandmother had it and it was caught early so hysterectomy's for both and no further endometrial cancers. For me the tamoxifen has been tolerable and I've found workarounds for ensuring I'm safe i.e. taking one baby aspirin a day along with my tamoxifen and regular checkups of the uterus!
