Wife Just Diagnosed w/ ES SCLC - What Can We Expect?

Posted by rlogan @rlogan, Feb 19, 2022

My wife received the following diagnosis yesterday: Primary malignant neoplasm of lung, secondary malignant neoplasm of liver, secondary malignant neoplasm of vertebral column. Four months ago she had a chest x-ray performed and no anomalies were noted.

We have surmised that this is likely Extensive Stage Small Cell Lung Cancer.

She has been referred to a local oncologist and a PET-CT scan has been ordered by our doctor.

Last evening we requested an appointment at the Mayo Clinic - Jacksonville at the suggestion of a friend.

Can anyone tell us what we can expect over the next few days/weeks/months?

Things took a turn for the worse today. Liz had a difficult time breathing and lost feeling in her abdomen. I took her to the local emergency room and they are keeping her overnight at least. They did another CT scan of her chest and abdomen - it appears that the mass in her lung has grown and is occupying more space. They contacted her Oncologist and he should be seeing us tomorrow. She is still not scheduled for her biopsy until next Wednesday for confirmation of cancer type. Seems to be growing faster than expected......

Will update as more info becomes available.

So sorry to hear this, hoping that this is a strong catalyst to get the tests moved up. She obviously needs some relief. Will be thinking of you today, sending you positive thoughts and strength.

They found a small blood clot in her lung and started her on Heparin to try and dissolve it. She has been placed on oxygen 24/7 and the Oncologist at the hospital has started giving her steroids' for her brain lesions. They expect to keep her for at least 1 more night of observation. On a good note, her appetite has improved and she is breathing easier on the oxygen. Will keep ya posted as things move along.

I hope that Liz is home by now with no other surprises. I'm glad that Liz has had some relief that she needs and that you are both able to rest more. Not a great way to spend the weekend!

Take care of yourself, Bob!

Thank you Merry.

Happily, Liz was released from the hospital around 5:00 pm today. She is on oxygen 24/7, started Dexamethasone (steroids) every 6 hrs and will be taking Eliquis (anti-clotting medicine) after her biopsy on Wednesday. In the mean time I am giving her an injectable blood thinner with a biological half-life of only 12 hrs. We have timed her injections so that it should be essentially gone from her bloodstream by the time of her biopsy. The every 6 hrs steroids are going to take a little while to get used to waking up in the middle of the night to administer, but such is life...

Hoping for a quite Tuesday and informative Wednesday.

Bob- Please double check to see if "every 6 hr. steroids" includes night time too. Every 6 hrs usually means about 3 ties a day, until you go to bed unless the directions say round the clock or the like!

Merry, Thanks for checking.

The biopsy of her lymph node went as expected and we should get the results Monday when we meet with the Oncologist. Liz also had a MediPort inserted for future chemo treatments. She is fine, still ambulatory and at home.

After her lung embolism last weekend she is on oxygen and now has a physical therapist and hospice checkup service that will be coming by about once a week to check on her and give her tips on handling the chemo and radiation treatments. Looking forward to getting her treatment started and possibly slowing the growth of the cancer. Fingers crossed.....

BTW... checked on the steriod frequency and you were right on the money with every 6 hrs that she is normally awake...
