Can you apply to another location?
Is it possible to apply to a different Mayo location if your referral to a specific one is denied? I was denied an appt at Rochester - can I apply at Jacksonville?

Good morning, @ramona11 Absolutely, you can apply to any of the Mayo campuses for treatment. I’m sorry your referral was denied. Unfortunately, sometimes the requests for appointments exceed the availability and cases get denied. But that can’t stop you from reapplying or reaching out to another clinic. Here’s the link to get the process started. http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63
Some speciality areas are also busier than others. May I ask which department you’re trying to get into?
I'm trying to get into the neurology department. My local neuro is the one who started the process - he says I am "way above his pay grade". I have been to Mayo Rochester previously in 2015 so we just figured it would be easier to go back there. I think we will try Jacksonville now, since we live in AL. I am ending up in the ER/hospital about every two weeks with horrible muscle spasms with laryngeal involvement. I have been diagnosed with Generalized dystonia before and had DBS at UAB but was later told at Vanderbilt that I had FND and didn't need the DBS. I did everything they said and am finding myself right back where I was before. I just saw a psychiatrist to see if there was something that could be done in that area but she said she saw nothing at all that she needed to treat in me - no depression, no anxiety disorder, mood disorders, etc. I also have a multitude of other health issues and take a lot of meds, so that just adds to the mix. I was taking Valium for the episodes, but my body got used to it and they changed to Klonopin. Now my body has acclimated to Klonopin and I am having daily episodes where my entire body spasms horribly and I struggle to breathe. We do our best to stay out of the ER, but it's hard to know when to go... Last night my husband gave me a Valium on top of the Klonopin because he didn't realize they were not supposed to be mixed. It did help, finally, thankfully. I have also added Benadryl to the mix but that it a band aid at best... Thank you for your time. We will probably try to get the referral in to Jacksonville. Or is Scottsdale more likely to get me into the neuro department? Any idea?
Blessings
Ramona
Me too. I don’t have a referral but just trying to get into the General Internal Medicine to get a proper diagnosis and then be referred to specialist.
My request for an appointment was denied at Rochester
Has anyone tried to make an online appointment for neurologist without going to GIM?
Yes I used the online appt for neuro at Mayo Phoenix. It is probably the same in Fla.
This is my first visit with Mayo so I did not have a referral from any MD.
I would try again at Rochester if that is the clinic you prefer.
I called for appt as a self referral to neuro at Mayo Phoenix and was denied.
so I tried the online appt procedure and they called me. This person was going to deny me again but this person admitted that they were not a medical person and did not understand the medical terms that I was using as I read her the results from my MRI.
I was thinking here is a non medical person making a decision about whether I can get an appt or not. It is like at your health insurance, non medical people make decisions whether to deny you coverage or not.
May I ask when your appointment is?
I already had my first appt with neuro last week. Only a few days after I spoke with the appt center on phone. I had also faxed a copy of my MRI to the neuro dept.
I already have appts for another MRI at Mayo and follow up plus appt with neuro surgeon in April.
Plus if you need another specialist related to this diagnosis they prefer that you be seen at mayo so that all your records are in one place.
Thanks. So the first appointment you made was with neuro already? I was hoping to be seen first by GIM and then get referrals to neurologist and rheumatologist
yes the first time that I was seen at Mayo was with neuro. I have a sudden hearing loss with abnormal MRI that is why I was seeing neuro.
They prefer that I see an ENT at Mayo as I was seeing an outside ENT. Any medical team likes to have all your records in one place.
Medicare covers Mayo also.
