I have read through this thread and can’t understand why people are tapering off their meds. If you said that you have been feeling really good for a long time and wanted to try to taper off meds gradually, I would understand.
I am on a high dose of Effexor xl and Wellbutrin xl which I take once a day every day.
I though about decreasing meds and asked my psychiatrist for his opinion. He said if I was doing well, why change anything? I trust him and I have the type of major depression that, untreated, has left me hospitalized on three occasions. I would be scared to death to experience that situation again and so I stay on my meds.
Is there something wrong with my thinking on this?

If a person is feeling well I would think it a good idea to remove any toxic physchiatric drug from your system and see what happens. She may feel just fine once she’s off. She can always reinstate if necessary.

Some people are very desperate to get help and this drug doesn’t work for them but often times they are advised to stay the course. When they experience bad withdrawals even with a slow taper they are even told it’s the symptoms of their depression coming back. This drug was overprescribed. I think that some people do want to get off meds for lots of reasons. I have a med I can’t stop taking without really bad withdrawals but it made me gain 60 lbs and can cause diabetes. I would rather have diabetes than a manic episode I guess but I would probably try to go off it so I could take something else if I got diabetes
