Calcium and Vitamin D for bone density
A recent bone density test came back in the low average range for my age. My OBGYN recommended calcium and vitamin D. I checked with a family member who is a pharmacist, and she says that the benefits of calcium supplements are not clear cut. Regarding vitamin D, I’m in the sunbelt, and spend at least 2 hours per day outdoors during 8 to 9 months a year (early morning, or evening, sun screen between 10 AM and 5 PM if applicable for pool, beach, for example). I’m sure many people on this forum have done their own research regarding the benefits of calcium pills, and I would love to hear what the current consensus is. I exercise regularly, so my bones get a workout from the muscles pulling on them, if that makes a difference. I think the data I was given is that statistically I have an 8% chance of a hip fracture in the next decade, based on the test results.

I like most of your comments, insight and advice. I do have to say, however, that I took Forteo at age 64 because after years of following all the self-help natural methods of diet, exercise and appropriate supplements my bone density continued to drop. Adding Forteo for two years increased Spine by 12.8% and Hip by 5%. So it does work for some people (and I had no negative reactions whatsoever). Every body is different and I think we need to encourage everyone to do what is best for their specific needs, tolerances and goals.
I think there is some caution about making decisions based on calcium levels. My doctor stated this, as the calcium level can vary from time to time, and many hormones and other health factors influence the level.
I just want to say I have read over and over that the best for of calcium that bones can utilize is an algae form of calcium plus Algae based Magnesium, Vit D3, K2 and Boron. I plan to add Strontium also.

Strontium will make bones look denser on a DEXA than they really are, because strontium is heavier than calcium. I just looked up the interaction with calcium and they do compete: strontium lowers absorption of calcium though this is possibly reversed with high dose Vitamin D. If you do take strontium, it is suggested that you take it a few hours away from calcium.
What about Algea Magnesium and what is Boron? I have severe OA and Kidney issues and need to keep everything in balance. In addition I have malapsorbtion issues.
Has anyone tried Fosamax for bone density loss? If so, what was your experience? My doctor has prescribed it for me, but I am reluctant due to all of the potential side effects. Thanks for your insights.

I tried Fosamax almost 20 years ago and developed a rash everywhere I was exposed to the sun. Switched to Actonel then...for 5 years....no drugs since.
No improvement in scores after 5 years. on Actonel...so doing it the natural way as others have. Scan over 2 years ago was basically the same..slight increase... after being off any drug for many years.

I was told by my doctor that walking was not considered weight-bearing and that I should either wear a weighted vest while walking or use weights.
I've had two weekly doses of fosamax. So far, no problems.
