Acid Reflux and its Symptoms: Are they chronic?

It is nice to hear what a healthy diet is… I try, but healthy does not digest well.

I had an extensive upper abdominal surgery in 2015. Two surgeons .. one a thoracic and the other a general surgeon who specialized in GI surgery. While in hospital and me still on dilaudid .. and husband was on a break from me… the thoracic surgeon came in for his last visit with me. He said: you will always have a gassy stomach… you will burp a lot! Don't bother taking Tums or anti gas products … they won't help. Do not eat raw vegetables and fruits (you can eat ripe bananas) .. do not eat fibrous foods. (like broccoli, celery, greens & such). Eat easily digestible foods.

He said theoe things to me while I was on feeding tube. I was on feeding tube a few months before surgery and a few after.. 13-14 months in all. Then other surgeon tells me same thing when I can start eating and adds more.. soft diet because of my swallowing problems. .. soft cooked veggies and fruit and high protein such as moist tender cooked meats and eggs Drink protein drinks. Well the protein drinks don't stay down well. Does not matter if they are milk, soy, rice or fruit juice based.

Once on foods again. I noticed if there was a lot of onion or garlic in my food I could not tolerate it. Cooking them in soups and stews or meatloaf they have to be minced or chopped very small.

I drink a dark roast coffee.. which has very little caffeine. I eat eggs sometimes… they are easily digest … but they cause a lot of burping.

I can eat from a cup to a cup and a half of food at one time. Today I had a little bit of pork country rib, (maybe a couple of ounces) a couple of tablespoons of baked sweet potato and a couple of small brussel sprouts… the latter makes me burp.

I have achalasia, Barrett's esophagus and esophagus spasms. I never count my burps .. I try to put them out of mind. I seem to burp less when I do.. or seems that way. Some days my husband will say: you're burping a lot more today. I will tell him the truth.. there was too much onion or garlic or some spice in whatever he cooked. He does the cooking now .. my feet are bad and I cannot stand long, but help him sometimes. He will tell me he will make note of it and do better next time and he does. He writes the note on the written recipe. I will eat a grilled cheese sandwich for supper. .. which the dog will wind up with a few bites of. I love peanut butter… and try it sometimes and then regret. Just now my snack was a few Cheez-Its. My blood pressure was low and my family doctor said: eat salty foods. Salty = gaining weight which I needed to do.. had slight threats of going back on feeding tube.

I feel your frustrations… no cure for my burping, but watching my “gassy foods” and swallowing habits have helped. My surgeries and swallowing problems seem to be the cause for my burps and when a lot of mucus for me is involved it is miserable, Breathing exercises seem to help some and so far I have not aspirated.

I hope you find relief.

Thank you for all the advise . I do mostly everything you said , for many years now . Yes must avoid anything spicy or even garlic or onion in food.. I really dread eating in general but we have to EaT To Live !!
My lunch is always a challenge for me , I eat small meals at home and healthy dinners of foods that may be less lightly to bring on the 1000’s of deep wet burps and non stop 🛑 churning gut and intestines.
Even when I wake up for the day (6:30 am ) my last bit of food has been 5:30 pm dinner … my gut/ small intestine has been going crazy for hours . The food is very much digested by then . So I’m just as bad on empty stomach.
I feel for all you have endured. I feel for anyone who has chronic digestive disorders. It takes away a lot of Joy in Life .
This world 🌎 and social events revolve around food and restaurants and weddings receptions, parties , etc….
It’s hard when you can’t really do things like everyone else w/o suffering.
Thanks again @fourof5zs .
I did make it through my future daughter in law’s bridal shower yesterday afternoon.
