Pain on right upper buttock cheek that does not radiate

Posted by simona70 @simona70, Jan 15, 2022

Hello, I have had a pain on my upper buttock cheek for a while now (a could of months at least. The pain does not radiate down my leg and I can sit comfortably. But It does not go away. It feels worse when I get up in the morning and I feel particularly stiff. Any ideas? Thanks!

S/I Joint Pain the new thing or what. Thats what I'm trying to understand myself. I felt a pain it my right back waist one day and then it became worse. I went to the doctors and then the x-ray and then the MRI and of it must be the SI joint. Ok, so what do we do. Steroid Injections no good, explanation joint is too big medicine just diffuses, so next the / RFA (Radio Frequency Ablation (ouch) and No Good. Explanation many nerves and probable other low back spine associated nerves and injury. More S/I injections, now a few more lumbar spine injections, how's it going, are we having fun yet. lol. Sometimes I think I am getting worse form all the jabbing and injections. Not to mention the medications, So many, so little notable effectiveness and keeping track of what to take when. What do I do? Stop and never have a quality life. Living hell. Keep getting more of the same and hoping and failing. The emotional and physical roller coaster is not good. Hanging in there wherever there is nowadays.

Interesting about no steroid injections for the SI joint. I have heard that it can be effective, but does make sense with what you were told. Was it particular to you or did the Orthopedic doc feel this is generally the case and have had them not be effective?

I had si joint injections a week ago and it was eye opening. I was told I had bursitis and got injections for that, didn’t help. Got the si injections and as soon as he placed the needle and I felt the twinge, I said that’s it! That’s the exact pain I’m having! The only pain I have is from the bruising at injection site. My si joint pain was instantly gone and is still gone a week later. I will say that if I “over extend” my leg the wrong way I will feel a twinge so I’m being careful. Enjoying my pain free hips while I can

Great to hear!! And very encouraging. Would you mind sharing if you received a numbing injection or steroid? And if a radiologist did this with an ultrasound guided injection?

I had bilateral ct guided si injections of both numbing meds and steroids. The only pain I feel is if I extend my leg the wrong way along with the pretty significant low back discomfort from the injections. Probably not normal to have such nasty bruising but I haven’t been normal in a long time lol

Did you have the numbing and steroids at the same time? Does the doc think the low back discomfort will get better after a period? Sounds like the bruising must be significant…hope it eases up for you in short order.

Yes they do numbing and then steroid. You wouldn’t want it done without the lidocaine trust me . The bruise in only on right side and it’s a pretty deep bruise. Hoping the discomfort eases soon

They numb you and then guide the needle and keep adding lidocaine as they need to. When they get to the si joint they inject lidocaine and then the steroid

Hi I’m Lisa and I want to let you know it could be sacroilitis/sI joint dysfunction My pain was so severe that when sitting I used to make a fist and put under area when I sat or drove the pressure seemed to help. Seemed like nobody really knew what it was until I went to ortho for my trochanteric bursitis and explained what I was experiencing. Since then I get SI joint injections and this is the only relief. Good Luck

@berard10: I do know that a fist under specific butt area is super helpful, but most of the time the pain is most intense when that is not an option (as in non-sitting). I’m still going with probably bursitis, since I’ve been doing a mini-set of Sciatica preventative exercises daily for 15+ years, and by definition, whatever deals with Sciatica, also deals with the piriformis muscle that the sciatic nerve passes through. For now I’m hanging in there. But once in a while (and it does happen very rarely, actually, when I least expect it, and for no reason) it would be nice to be pain free. In all joints. And all muscles. And all ligaments.

Hi, I have pain in my left butt cheek, it hurts and aches when I walk. No pain down the leg just pain in the middle of my butt. Feels better after I rest it for a few days, but comes right back when I walk at a brisk pace for exercise. Hurts when I rotate my leg inward orthopedic doc sending me for p.t. And m.r. i I’m not sure if it’s my back or hip or sciatica? Advil helps some. Not sure what the cause is. I’m frustrated!

Hi @ksm, Welcome to Connect. Your pain sounds similar to Piriformis Syndrome which hopefully PT will help.

"Piriformis syndrome is a condition in which the piriformis muscle, located in the buttock region, spasms and causes buttock pain. The piriformis muscle can also irritate the nearby sciatic nerve and cause pain, numbness and tingling along the back of the leg and into the foot (similar to sciatic pain)." --- What Is Piriformis Syndrome?: https://www.spine-health.com/conditions/sciatica/what-piriformis-syndrome.

Here are some exercises that may help - Piriformis Syndrome: Exercises: https://myhealth.alberta.ca/health/AfterCareInformation/pages/conditions.aspx?hwid=zp4474&

How soon is your PT appointment?
