Anyone had scoliosis surgery? What was your outcome?

Has anyone had scoliosis surgery at Mayo Clinic and how was your procedure handled? What was your outcome? How successful was it? Did you do bone strengthening prior?

I’m scheduled for T2-S1 fusion at Mayo in May. I too would like to find someone who has had this done.

I had a Harrington rod placement in 1976 when I was 15. I am currently 61 and am glad I had the surgery. Prior to the surgery I had constant back pain and my clothes never fit right. While it took me years to figure out good diet and exercise would make my life better I am currently physically active and living a regular life. I’ve had to get a firmer pillow as my neck has had some problems related to the geometry of the surgery..nothing a good pillow won’t ease. Good luck and take care of yourself 😊. I had my surgery in Seattle Washington, don’t remember where. I now live in the Midwest.

Do you recall the recovery? How long is your fusion? Any restrictions? Sorry for all the questions.

As far as recovering, I remember being in a plaster cast from neck to hips for months and it had to be redone once because I gained weight and it became uncomfortable. After I was out of it I was fitted with a fiberglass form fitting (Velcro straps) support that I had to wear for awhile but don’t remember how long. I remember I was encouraged to get out and walk and I did. I remember hearing about others with a similar surgery who had issues with the clips that anchored the metal bars coming loose but I had no issues with recovery. I know it took time. I remember my doctor recommending that I wait to have children for 10 years..that was reasonable given I was 15😊. He also said not to go horseback riding for a while, but those are the only things I remember being limitations.

I believe my fusion is the same as you say you are getting. I’m pretty active doing small sailboat racing, long distance biking and lots of walking, so l guess didn’t really think in terms of limitations as much as adapting to my new normal. You can do it!
