Your Tips: How do you manage out-of-pocket healthcare costs?

There are costs to healthcare that may not be covered by Medicare, Medicaid, or your insurance. These costs can be beyond a family's financial means. Sometimes people seek to raise funds, move locations, switch jobs, or apply for charitable aid.

What resources or steps have you taken to help cover out-of-pocket costs or to get coverage?

@lioness and all...Do you have a Humana prescription plan? or Humana health plan? I have United Health Care Plan F supplemental health and Humana Prescription plan. I love the Humana script-pays for most of my drugs and are easy to work with if I have questions. Same with United Health Care, I'm getting all the meds possible 90 day supply at the same co-pay as 30 day supply. And, now that my retirement monies are less, this is really important.
I've never gotten a break on OTC things; Does Humana Prescription offer this?

@ess77 Hi Elizabeth .I'm on Humana HMO I love this plan They keep track on refills I've never been without meds It is shipped to me .There is no co pay only if it's in Tier 3,4 .Since I retired 14 yrs ago I have had this plan . there is no charge for anything Dr 0 labs 0 x-rays 0 When you retire you only have your s s and pension no raises except cost of living with S S this year will be 5% which is the most I ever had .I chose my Dr,s most are in all plans I'm happy with the HMO

@becsbuddy Hi Becky I'm doing pretty looked at exercises from Lori silversneaker think I'll start tonight My dexascan l.hip is 0.3 from fall so ordered some supplements and going to get serious on exercise .I did get my scooter finally that helps me get around How are you doing? Take care Linda

@jessismama Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! I'm glad you have found us, and trust you will read stories of inspiration and ideas.

My chemo is Revlimid, which carries a $3000 co-pay each month. I went through my cancer center to place an application for financial aid for this medication, and they "shopped" it to the manufacturer. I had to provide tax returns and proof of income.

It's tedious, can be overwhelming, and frustrating, and exhausting, but worth looking into.

What type of cancer is your daughter dealing with, if I may ask?

one of the best (I hope) things that we did was get rid of the supplement plan and sign onto an advantage plan.. the balances are set amounts and truthfully, we just save the money we were paying the supplement and RX plan to pay any set amounts as we need to. No monthly fee. Primary Care visits are no balance, as are mammograms, colonoscopies and other procedures. All our drugs are 100% free ( so far). The agent whom we signed up with was very knowledgable and told us seniors rarely go back to a supplement after subscribing to an Advantage plan.

it is Aetna advantage plan. Find a Medicare advisor and talk to them......we are just putting $ away for any procedures that may have a balance. The balances are set amounts from Aetna, not actual balances. And btw: you don't wanna move here. Way too cold! 😜
