Post recovery Nissen fundiplication

Posted by eagle71 @eagle71, Dec 11, 2021

Surgery in September 2021 went well, one month later had chest back and shoulder pain and reflux returned to my throat and mouth. Surgeon said return back to protonix 40 mg twice daily. By November no change. December had chest and abdominal ct with nothing to show. My cardiologist has eliminated cardio issues for the chest pain.

Sound like your Nissen wrap has slipper out of place. A barium swallow test would show if there is a problem with the wrap. Good luck to you.

Had an upper gi with negative results. Waiting to see what’s next. Some speculation on musculoskeletal problem but that’s a big if

Surgeon now having me do a gastric emptying study

I had a Nissen back in a Central Iowa Hospital /Clinic in March of 2015.. It was a life changing event.. It NEVER WORKED.. I lost 50 pounds and had to go to Mayo MN to find out what happened.. The surgery damaged some of the hairnet like nerves that empty the stomach. So the surgery /surgeon gave me post-operative gastroparesis...Every day still take the meds I was wanting to get off ... I have to eat small meals often.. the best you feel is during the morning when that stomach is not full.. it takes up to 4 hours to empty.. Gravity is the way to empty the stomach now... I have gained back 20-25 pounds.. but every day is a challenge.. Mayo gave me a way to cope... they can not undo the nerve damage... or the Nissen... Good Luck.. Ken

I had my surgery in September of 2018. I have the same post op issues mine was an ‘open surgery’. They say a redo will not help…it sucks.

Hi Ken, You may be interested in a facebook page called nissen funduplication take down group. You will find the support that you need and others just like you. I had a NF in 2017 and it was the worst decision that I have ever made. I will be having it taken down in Jan. I'm sorry that you have nerve damage and yes, that can't be repaired but the nissen can be taken down. Most doctors will not or do not want to take them down. I have seen stories like yours on that facebook page. Some of the people on there that have gastroparesis, have there nissen taken down and converted into a gastric bypass, which is an alternative. I really wish you the best. Sandy

Had the gastric emptying study, results only speculate gastroparisis or gasrtric control

Study results found emptying only 37% suggesting gastric outlet obstruction. Waiting on word from my surgeon. Don’t think this is related to my chest pain

Apparently only 37% emptying. Study suspects gastric outlet obstruction
