Does magnesium help neuropathy?

Hi All - Anyone ever receive magnesium infusions for idiopathic neuropathy?

Hi @runnergirl, I take magnesium 400mg daily as part of my supplements. I'm not familiar with magnesium infusions but have read information that they are helpful for chronic pain which I think would include idiopathic neuropathy since it could fall under the umbrella of chronic pain. I was not able to find other members discussing magnesium infusions for neuropathy but hopefully some who my have tried it will share their experience. Here's some information I found that may be helpful.

-- Utilization of Magnesium for the Treatment of Chronic Pain: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34221945/
-- PubMed search results for "Magnesium infusions for neuropathy": https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=Magnesium+infusions+for+neuropathy

Has your doctor recommended a magnesium infusion for your neuropathy pain?

Thanks, @johnbishop - I too found the same articles, and didn't find any MC discussions either. I appreciate you searching. Even though I don't have "pain" (which is so subjective), my doc thinks the treatment might be helpful. She said I'd know after one infusion. At least it's something to try. We will see...

Please keep us posted. I also have no "pain" but my feet/ankles are soooo tight preventing normal walking that maybe it would help.

Thanks, @retired123 I'll let you know if I end up having them. First need to deal with the insurance company.

I 've had neuropathy in my feet since i had chemo for breast cancer. My oncologist at the time told me to take magnesium L-threonate. I bought some on Amazon. I had stopped taking it because it gave me diarrhea. I figured I'd try again. I have had some diarrhea, but I figured I'd just treat the diarrhea and use the magnesium. A few days ago, I noticed I had feeling in my afflicted left hand again. Last night I got out of the shower , walked to my room and felt something was odd. I realized I was feeling the cushiness and texture of the carpet under my feet! My big hope is maybe I will improve enough to drive again. I'll be 81 in October.
I also have been using the new VoxxLife patches for my balance and they definitely help.
Plus, I started taking liquid quinine and my leg cramps completely stopped. Before they affected me sitting, bending and trying to sleep. I'm a a retired RN and I love researching ways to "fix" myself.

@raebaby, this does give hope. I hope you continue to experience improvements with oral magnesium. I actually moved your comment to this existing discussion:

@runnergirl and @retired123 were looking into magnesium infusions for neuropathy.

Rae, there are different types of oral magnesium. How did you know to use magnesium L-threonate? Was it recommended by your doctor?

I did some research on line and my magnesium was recommended to cause less diarrhea. So, I bought it, and then I recently read that it was the best type for neuropathy. It was just luck that is what I had bought. My doctor originally just recommended that I use magnesium, period., I hadn't taken any for about 7 months and my neuropathy was getting worse. I live alone out in the country and can't get fresh vegetable. I can shop at Costco and stock up on a bunch of frozen foods.

That's really good news that the magnesium is helping your neuropathy @raebaby. The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy also has a list of complementary and alternative treatments that help neuropathy that you might find helpful here -- https://www.foundationforpn.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Complementary-and-Alternative-Treatments-Revised-2020-final.-1.pdf,

Thanks for this great list, John, I’ve been working on several of them, and it’s an awesome checklist of things to try.

Any reason why cannabis isn’t included? Apart from it being illegal on a federal basis, I mean… some states have legalized it, and it’s certainly something that I get great relief with.

Hi Steve, The Foundation for PN does list medical cannabis under treatments here - https://www.foundationforpn.org/treatments/ that has a link to an article on the site here:
