New question - How do you avoid weight loss on MAC antibiotic therapy?
I was recently diagnosed with bronchiesctasis and sent to a pulmonologist by my primary physician. The cause was a seemingly endless asthma attack with a violent, productive cough that lasted for many months. He did many tests and cultures and diagnosed & treated pseudomonas for 2 months (4 courses of antibiotics (levaquin/tobramycin) and the cough continued. When I saw him for a followup, he apologetically told me I have MAI, and due to the cough, bronchiectasis and the lung damage showing on my CT scan, he felt it needed to be treated.
Enter the big 3 antibiotics - Rifampin, Ethambutol & Clarithromycin. He patiently spent time talking to me about the therapy and side effects, had suggestions about using live-culture yogurt & probiotics, and advised me to do my own research while waiting to start (had to finish Levaquin). He & his nurse were great at answering follow-up questions, but here is one for the group.
I began this journey at age 66, 5'2" tall and weighing 116 pounds, and I know I need to stay above 110# to feel okay. I also cannot eat any wheat products or tree nuts. The first 10 days of therapy is going well except intermittent nausea and slight diarrhea. But I have lost 3 pounds already without being sick, and I know from experience that there will be side effects from using antibiotics long-term. Any suggestions for maintaining my weight? I cannot tolerate Ensure and most products like that, which my doc suggested, so it's not an option. I also cannot eat any wheat products or tree nuts. Any suggestions for maintaining my weight?

@sueinmn I have not taken the antibiotics and yet have lost 26 lbs. I've 5' 7 so I'm skinny and trying hard not to go below a 100. I can't eat dairy so milk shakes etc are out I don't have much appetite but I do eat three meals a day. It seems no matter how hard I try, I can't gain or stop the loss. I'll be interested in other replies. Flib

@flib ....Weight loss is a serious concern as you need weight to fight. I eat avocados and incorporate plant based protein powder in anything I can tolerate....also sautéed mushrooms and spinach in tons of olive oil....and although dairy is out you might be able to tolerate goat kefir and grass fed cow butter....I buy Kerrygold from Ireland. Many small meals....a banana a day....buy organic turkey slices and roll them organic kalamata olives, celery and organic peanut butter....even a spoonful of anything anytime helps....keep weighing yourself and keep eating...I agree that probiotics help enormously.......I too was losing weight and continue to fight it by snacking all day. You can do this!

Thank you. I do most of the things you suggest. I use Flaxseed milk which I actually like. Sometimes it's just a relief to be understood...friends like to say they wish they had my too thin problem. I've given up explaining.

I have the same issue and not on treatment...I'm normally a vegan but started eating meat (humanely raised of course) which helps...I too cannot do dairy at all (eg nothing with whey or casein in it either) so the meat has helped. Eat as much high calorie/high fat food as possible (eg chips and fries...pizza with vegan cheese) - all have helped.

I don't eat meat but lately I've been eating fish. I'm, by nature, a vegetable and fruits eater, even as a child. Cheese has never held any appeal. But, I'm stuffing everything in my mouth now. Nevertheless the scale keeps going down. Would love to make a fat exchange with someone. Thank you. Flib

HI - what plant-based protein powder do you use - I cannot do the ones from the health food store as they taste is so awful I cannot even disguise it in a fruit/veg smoothie. Cannot use anything containing wheat in any form, malted barley, and nuts or nut flours, so many are automatically rejected.
Has anyone tried using powdered eggs in smoothies and sauces as a booster?

Wow, I'm going to add avocados to smoothies - I make a big batch, refrigerate & sip throughout the day.
Peanut butter is temporarily causing indigestion, but I'll try it again in a few weeks - it's what my husband snacks on by the spoonful to control blood sugar.

Can you do goats' milk? It kept my daughter alive through her last pregnancy & beginning of nursing - we buy it powdered and canned (Meyenberg - online - for a long time Thrive had the lowest price, but check around) because fresh isn't always so fresh & tastes "off". Now it's helping my grandson thrive as Mom had to wean due to a new pregnancy - we're slowly introducing cows' milk, but he gets diarrhea, bloat & serious hiccups beyond 6 oz/day of cows' milk. We make everything from it including puddings, ice cream, smoothies, sauces... Hmm.. maybe I'll try adding the powder to my smoothies, because I also tolerate limited dairy - mostly yogurt and aged cheeses.

I've lived with this my entire life, as has one cousin - we see it as the flip side of the weight issue, and both have siblings the battle too much weight - they are more sympathetic than most as they see how we struggle to eat "enough". I have a friend who lives with this post-cancer, and we plan to team up next time we're together to create some more smoothies we can both handle

@sueinmn Hello...a plant protein powder that is pretty palatable is Garden of Life~Vanilla Raw Protein (from 13 raw organic sprouts) It is great as a smoothie with a little banana and coconut milk if you can tolerate that. It is Vegan, gluten free, dairy free, soy free and organic.
I think the peanut butter may be causing indigestion as it is a legume and sometimes hard to digest...can you handle seeds? Sesame butter (tahini) is pretty tasty.
