Breast cancer treatment and kidney problems

Posted by pattykatty @crazyhazy, Oct 24, 2021

I've been on arimidex for 10 months for breast cancer, stage 2. Had lumpectomy, 30 rounds of radiation. Been on 2 other inhibitors, side effects were horrible. My onc switched me to arimidex. Besides all the side effects (joint pain, weakness, mood swings, etc) I now have problems with kidney functions. My creatinine levels and GFR scores have gone up, GFR decreased. Has anyone else have creatinine levels go up?

I did take arimidex for according to husband 10 years but I did not have any kidney issues. I thought it was 8, but my memory could be softening about all the different drugs. Lol

Hello, I have been on Arimidex (Anastrozole) since July 2020 and yes my Creatinine level has gone up. Doctor said it is not something I need to worry about but something they are keeping an eye on. I was the first patient she had that experienced that, I’m
Going to share your story with her, thanks for sharing! Is your doctor concerned about the changes?

I’ve been on Anastrozole since September 2019. I had blood work done in May 2021. My Creatinine numbers have been the same through through blood tests. I see my Oncologist at end of November so definitely will ask, even though my numbers seem in range. Thank you

@crazyhazy, kidney function is something that doctors keep a close eye on. There are many drugs that can have a temporary or permanent impact on the kidneys, even drugs like over-the-counter pain medications like aspirin, naproxen and ibuprofen. The following breast cancer treatments can have an affect on the kidneys:
- Paraplatin (carboplatin)
- Afinitor (everolimus)
- Avastin (bevacizumab)

Whether Arimidex (anastrozole) is the culprit or not, it is good that your doctors are monitoring your creatine levels. Did you have kidney issues before breast cancer?

Thank you so much for replying. Actually, I had no kidney issues before taking arimidex. Ive been on meds for 10 most. All I can do is continue with meds, hoping no other health issues come up. Thanks again.

When you see your doctor next week, you could ask your doctors if one of the other hormone therapies could be less scary to your kidneys.

Thank you Chris. Unfortunately, I have tried 3 other hormone therapies. Side effects were so horrible, 10x worse than arimidex, I had no choice. So, this is my last option. But I'll see what my onc and family dr say.

Managing ESBC with T2D, but after starting Tratuzamab and Arimidex in April, bun & creatinine levels higher wit egfr down to 46. Now trying to understand what’s causing CKD and how slow or stop the progression. Don’t know if latest medicines have any impact but would love to hear if any else had similar experiences and how you’ve managed it.
