Kahler Grand in Rochester

Posted by amywood20 @amywood20, Oct 25, 2021

Hello! I am traveling to Mayo in November and have reservations at the Kahler Grand since it right across the street from the Clinic. I have selected one of the newly renovated rooms. In the past, we have stayed at an Airbnb. Since I am traveling alone this time and won't have a vehicle, I picked the Kahler Grand due to location. Has anyone stayed there in one of their renovated rooms? I am on the verge of cancelling and picking a different hotel, as I've seen some not to great reviews. I am very mobile so walking isn't an issue. The reason for the trip is to see someone in their spine center. I had an ACDF C4-C6 in Dec 2019 where I live and am having problems. Something isn't right so I am seeking out the experts at Mayo. When I have been there before it's been for my PKD/PLD but unfortunately, I am unable to be seen for that this trip. Anyway, looking to see if anyone has anything positive to say about the Kahler Grand before I cancel and look elsewhere to another connecting hotel. Thanks!

Hi @amywood20,
In my personal opinion, I have always been most comfortable in the Mayo Clinic Marriott. Not only is it closer to the spine center (Neuro and Neurosurgery), but it connects to the clinic on the second or third floor so you don't have to endure the harsh November weather!

@amandaburnett the box you noted shows the Kahler Inn & Suites. Isn't that different than the Kahler Grand, which is where I have the reservation for? Or is it the same thing?

Hi Amy, you’re right. The Kahler Grand is not the same hotel as the Kahler Inn & Suites. I’ve not stayed there so I don’t have a review for you. But they are two separate hotels blocks apart.
I hope you have a productive visit with Mayo Clinic. ☺️

Hi @amywood20 There are three boxes that I highlighted the two red ones are the hotels and the green on is where your appointments will be. I was showing where the Kahler was versus the Marriott. 🙂

@amandaburnett yep, I understand what the map was showing. I was just saying that the Kahler on that map is not the one I was asking about. The Kahler Grand is on 2nd Avenue where the Kahler Inn and Suites is on 3rd Avenue. I appreciate what you were trying to show me though. 🙂

Oh my goodness, you are quite right. Haha My apologies, I misread your previous question. I did highlight the wrong hotel 🙂 But I do still think the Marriott is a better choice. There has been a lot of construction downtown, so I would call a couple and see if that is still going on.
Here is a map of the skyways and subways so you can get around without freezing.

@amandaburnett I just realized there is a Hyatt in Rochester now, which wasn't there the last trip. We have their credit card and so many points I could stay there for free. It's three miles away from Mayo and they do run a shuttle. Even though it would be free, I'm not sure I want to rely on the shuttle. I'd prefer a hotel connected to Mayo, which they are not.

Yes. Stayed for 42 nights while receiving proton radiation. The view of the Mayo Gonda building was great. Can walk to everything. The Marriott was too pricey for us for 42 nights. More than 30 is a lease at a reduced rate and tax exempt

I have been a Mayo patient since 2016. I return to Rochester for check-ups twice a year. I also had ACDF surgery at Mayo in April 2019. I always stay at the Kahler Grand. They have a Mayo Clinic patient rate. I also like the Grand Grille restaurant…..very friendly servers and good comfort food.

Have you had a problem in the past with the shuttle. It has been a few years for us but we used the shuttle every day and they were Johnny on the spot, even in the dead of winter.
