How to stop gangrene pain

That must be heartbreaking to watch you father be in so much pain. I'd like to introduce you to fellow Connect members @lioness @franknick and @sickvick as they have some experience with gangrene and may be able to offer you support or advice.

Back to you father @aliali how is he doing otherwise? How is he managing his diabetes?

@aliali Hi I know it's heartbreaking to see your father with gangrene of his toes. I'm sorry to hear about this .My husband was a diabetic and ended up with a black spot on his heel I can tell you of what his Dr did that helped The Dr pit wet to dry dressings in that area Don't Debread Dr put a wet saline dressing on sterile gauze then wrapped it with sterile gauze several times a day I hope this helps My husband was in the nursing home at the time

Hi @aliali, what was the solution to your dad's pain?

He passed away 2-3 years ago. I hate to say it but I have to; diabetes made him blind, caused gangrenous feet and blood poisoning due to the presence of feet wounds. Blood poisoning was unbeatable. Doctors failed to deal with it.

My friend’s roommate has been going to get some sort of oxygen treatments for their troublesome diabetic foot problems that have been laying them up. It may be called hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Sorry I don’t know more specifics, or how readily available this sort of treatment is. He lives in a very urban area. To me this sounds like a good idea if one’s doctor finds it appropriate. Her roommate is not a person of means so insurance must cover this.

Hopefully someone who has undergone oxygen treatments will weigh in on it’s effectiveness. If it indeed facilitates healing perhaps it can reduce pain in the process.

I myself lean towards things like acupuncture when dealing with pain in general. This isn’t covered by my insurance plan although some plans do cover it. This treatment isn’t palatable to many. If you locate a good practitioner you will hardly feel anything. Just don’t go to a student!

If your father is now wheelchair bound elevating leg rests can help reduce pressure from swelling, that much I do know.
