@jspremich

I was diagnosed with MAC and another bacteria over two years ago. Apparently, one is not good enough. Out of the ten antibiotics that were capable of working wonders on my bacteria, only 2 would be effective and only 50% of the time. Lucky me. Fortunately, my infectious disease (one retired and another took over) specialists, both discouraged me with starting the cocktail of drugs. They advised me to stay clear, because of obvious side effects, of the medicine as long as I was feeling o.k. Over the years the symptoms would come and go. For the last 6-7 months, I have (knock on wood or maybe gold) had minor flare-ups. For whatever it's worth (And I'm not claiming anything here), I'm a vegetarian and have been for 45years. (I'm 81)
MAC periodically reminds me that its still there, waiting to strike at any moment.

@jspremich wow! You are doing great!  81 that is great! You must be a very positive and courageous women!  I am so proud of you! Antibiotic could have been worst with all the secondary effect.  Keep thinking your lungs are doing find and keep eating good! That

helps! I will keep you in my prayers! XxooNick52

@jspremich please read https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/how-to-prevent-re-infection-of-macmai/ this info will help you to not add to the bacterial load in your lungs.

@jspremich Thank you for telling me that.

I also am 81 and a vegetarian for 55 years. Only on med worked with my bacteria. I took it for abut 6 months then had to get off it as the side effect was loss of hearing in my left ear. I've been diagnosed with Mac and bronc for 8 years, likely had it for some time prior to the diagnoses. I'd say I had good quality of life for the first 5 of the 8 years. Now, I have extreme fatigue many days, can't do much. But even on the bad days I am functioning. I've picked up a lot of info about boosting my energy on this site, especially from Terri who is some kind of saint. . .

@flib You give me way too much credit! By the way, I went vegetarian last week. I am trying to avoid acid producing foods. I have litmus testing strips and my ph is off the charts acidic. My tongue always burns. Since I quit the meat and alcohol, my tongue stopped burning. I had coffee this a.m. (acid producer) and the burning returned. I love my caffien in the a.m. and it is a tough one to give up. Will try weining off. I am having tofu stir fry tonight. Do you have any tips for vegetarian diet? What do you eat for breakfast?

I'm not vegan so I eat eggs in the morning. Unfortunately, I'm also not much of a cook. Last night for dinner I had a chopped salad, avocado dip and taco chips and a cup of soup. I'm always on the look out for good soups as it is the easiest thing for me to eat and digest. I gave up coffee a year ago and only have one cup of tea in the morning. Rather boring. There are loads of good recipes out there if you're into cooking bu I've always been the cook who throws away dirty pots...no talent in the kitchen. I do make smoothies and get lots of fruit that way. I like flaxseed millk. Sounds awful but I think it taste more like milk than almond milk. Great on oatmeal etc. Besides my lousy lungs I have no other serious health problems; joints are good, mind is sharp heart is fine. I gave up meat long ago because I love animals and hate cruelty. I think it's a healthy decision...not easy so I'm wishing you the best of luck. I had acid reflux but eliminated acid foods...good-by tomatoes and orange juice...and I'm OK., not on meds for it.

@flib The rest of you is probably in great shape because you have been a vegetarian for so long. I am not doing a vegetarian diet as much as an acid free diet. Eggs are supposedly acid producing so I can't eat those. I don't know if my change in diet will help or not. I am just tired of my tongue burning so bad. It is very annoying.

@flib it would be a good idea to share meal menu as a vegan with all of us. Do you have a balance diet with alkaline and acid.  Do you have a lot of sugar?  We must also watch sugar. It is a sweet poison very acid. I eat small pieces as a treat once an a while.

Milk and ice cream is high in sugar hello mucus if i ate too much! So now I am very very moderate on acid food.  I am like windwalker when I have acid food my tongue burns so now I eat much less acid food.  I cook all my food to avoid the sugar etc.  I know

what I eat! Nick

@nick52 So you have the burning tongue too?!! Mine is driving me nuts. From what I have read, chronic disease and inflammation causes the ph to be more acidic. I think that is why my tongue burns. I have coated it with a thin layer of baking soda. It calms it for a short while. Watermelon is also soothing. What do you do?

@windwalker I do not have this all the time. I have what they call a geographic tongue and there is nothing to do about it.  I have done a lot of reading and find a graphic with all the organ points on the tongue.  (Like liver, colon, heart etc) I know all

the food that will make my tongue burned like fat, sugar, (even baked chips) wine, any alcohol, ice cream (very bad) salt. Gravy and most acid food, so I am trying to stay away from it as much as possible.  When I eat some I am aware why my tongue burns so

I drink more cold water or ice cube to take away the burning if it is bad. i agree with you that it is agrevating but One doctor in California gave me the diagnostic when I went to his office for a sore throat.  I have done a lot of research and question every

doctor I have seen since then and they all told me the same thing. It is not dangerous it is aggravating only.  Now I do not bother about the tongue anymore.  I know if I eat an ice cream I will suffer if I make the choice. I found the best ice cream fir my

tongue is the MacDonald one. It is made with skim milk I was told.  It doesn’t burn as much lol. I do cheat but very moderately.  The place on my tongue that was the worst was the liver so I treat my liver with MILK THISTLE but not the pills. They don’t work

the same as the brown liquid from Hübner the one my nutritional doctor prescribe me.  It helps!  Since I am taking Dr Ohirra’s probiotic my tongue doesn’t burn much anymore. Terri I think it is the best treatment I had tried so far.  I also cook all my food.

I buy nothing made at the store.  I was looking to meet you last winter in Florida but we bought another house so we had to move etc.  Very busy! I hope next winter. We have a chance to sit and chat. Are you far from the highway to Florida .  We go through

NC and SC. Nick
