Ugh, I know our problem of houseplants. I still have a couple in the house I can’t bare to part with. I wear a mask, water them at night right before bed.
I wonder if you can buy sterilized soil? Maybe @sueinmn would know? A while back I was reading about sterilizing soil in the microwave or oven. But we shouldn’t really be in the house during either of those operations. And I’d worry about the fan in the microwave releasing any fungus or contaminates making them airborne.
Could you wear a mask or have your husband pot the plant outdoors, water it and then bring it in the house? That might help avoid any issues.

@loribmt and @rosemarya Yes, you can get sterilized potting soil, then to keep stuff from growing on it and getting in the air, top it with a generous layer of aquarium gravel.
As for succulents, you can pot them in cactus mix, which looks like gravel and is far less likely to be contaminated. And they want to be in a very bright window and kept quite dry.

@loribmt. As you all know, I know nothing about keeping houseplants alive, but I did read years ago that you shouldn't water them at night - only in the morning. Probably from a story in an ancient copy of Reader's Digest, and we know that everything we read in the Reader's Digest is TRUE! giggle. Can any one of you gardeners set me straight on that fact? Thankyou! Laurie
