Significant osteoporosis: I need a bone plan
60 y/o , fit and active (I thought) but my first bone scan showed osteoporosis in spine (-3.3). Want to start Evenity, Tyblos, or Forteo. Its really the first health issue I've had in my life, and I'm kind of stumped. How can I find reliable third party research into their relative risks & efficacy -- only research I can find online is done by the companies themselves.

@artscaping and @heyhey,
This decision was based purely on the doctor's discretion. I know that I can't afford some of the more expensive drugs on the market for bone loss, so I'm going to give it a try and see how it works for me. I'll keep you all posted!
Diagnosed with severe osteoporosis and looking to weigh my options I’m active and am starting a calcium and vitamin d regiment but am concerned about side effects,how long they can last and if the drugs would be worth the risk?
Hi @lorkay and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. The people here on Connect are patients just like you, so while they can't offer medical advice, they can share their experiences and what they have learned from them.

What type of medications has your doctor suggested?
Thank you, my dr has recommended either Forteo or Prolia and I'm really struggling with a decision based on side effects that I have been reading about.
Good morning @lorkay . I, too, was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis caused by prednisone treatments for my autoimmune disease. I read everything in this discussion and was very conflicted like you. I saw my endocrinologist last week and he recommended Reclast. When i questioned him about the side effects, he said “I've been doing this for 20 years and i can count on one hand the number of patients who have had problems.” So, i decided to trust him and go with it.
Will you let me know what you decide?
I will try and remember to do that and appreciate your comment. I sent an email to my dr asking again about the side effects and she is willing to meet with me again if need be, right now I'm leaning toward the Forteo daily shots.
In reply to @lorkay ….. I have taken both medications and was not able to take Forteo due to chronic migraines and I have had no problems taking Prolia. I think everyone reacts according to their own individual makeup and discussing and experimenting with medications is how I found what worked for me(in conjunction with my doctor). I did not want to choose the “natural” route due to family history and observing older relatives with this disease who did not have access to medication and how the disease progressed for them.
Good evening @lorkay. I was just reviewing some posts and landing on yours. Perhaps you already know this but I want to make sure. Forteo and Prolia have different purposes. Forteo is a medication for building bone. Prolia is for maintaining bone. There are three medications that actually build bone: Forteo, Tymlos, and Evenity. All are injections. Is that what you are trying to do at this time?
Chris
Yes my dr has suggested either one and I’m debating based on side effects which one as I’m leaning to Forteo at this point,
I read your post and would be interested in your final choice since I have taken Tymlos. I do not know much about the other two. Also, my docs just put me on Tymlos and I knew nothing about all these other medications that build bone. Reading everyone's comments has really broadened my horizon on what is available. Now I can ask my docs about their opinion on these different medications and if any are good for me. And I have learned about alot of side effects that apply to each. Thanks to everyone sharing their experiences. KLH
