You can get COVID-19 vaccine booster and flu shots at the same time

U.S. health officials recently announced recommendations that all fully vaccinated Americans get a COVID-19 booster shot eight months after they received their second dose of the vaccine, stating the booster shot would help increase their protection against the surging delta variant.

For many Americans, that’s right around the time when they’d normally receive the seasonal flu vaccine, and they want to know if getting the COVID-19 booster shot will have any effect on getting the flu shot this fall. the answer: Yes, you can get a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot and the flu shot at the same time.

Dr. Gregory Poland, an internist at the Mayo Clinic, says there are no issues with getting both the flu shot and the COVID-19 vaccine because they don't interfere with each other or add any risk

According to the CDC, a person can get a COVID-19 vaccine and other vaccines, like the seasonal flu shot, during the same visit to the doctor or pharmacy, and that people no longer need to wait 14 days between vaccinations as they previously recommended.

“Experience with other vaccines has shown that the way our bodies develop protection, known as an immune response, after getting vaccinated and possible side effects of vaccines are generally the same when given alone or with other vaccines,” said the CDC.

Are there any side effects from the Covid 19 booster shot?

REPLY

Maybe it is true for most, but I will still wait between vaccines because overall statistics for many doesn't represent the individual.

The possible side effects for the booster are the same as the first 2 doses. Which vaccine did you get @nazleer?

I had mine and I had a sore arm for a day or two, bit as sore as with the second shot. Nothing really.

My husband and I got a shingles vaccine the same day as our flu shot last year. We were both on the couch all day the next day, it hit us hard, maybe it was the shingles shot, but I will not do that again.

Convenient. Would the flu shot also be free?

If one has been recently exposed to covid, should they be checked for infection before having a shot or simply proceed? Can vaccination sites check for infection?

@jetsetter From everything I have heard the shingles shot does have stronger side effects than most vaccines. I have not had it due to it not yet being recommended for me but most of the people I know who have had did have side effects.

I am definitely getting the flu vaccine soon. I generally wait until October because that way it lasts pretty much through flu season but the recommendation this year is to get it earlier, I guess because there was so little spread of the flu last year with everyone isolating.

I think you’re right, bottom line, I would not get two vaccines at the same time again. The time I got the shingles and flu the same day was also the first time I had gotten the high dose flu vaccine recommended for those over 65, so that could have been a factor.
