Shoulder Replacement Support Group

Posted by hbartels @hbartels, Feb 22, 2019

Hey All!

I was hoping someone in this group might be able to let me know if the Mayo Orthopedic Clinic in Minnesota has a support group for people who are considering a shoulder replacement? Or have had one in the past?

Thanks and I look forward to hearing your responses!

I have had three reverse shoulder surgeries ( one had to be redone— my fault) . I’m doing fine now. The shoulders are not totally normal like before, but they are pain free and allow me to do many everyday tasks now except “ backcomb” the cowlick in the back of my head. I can even swing dance a bit! It takes lots of PT to regain strength and range of motion. I worked on it religiously for a few months. I am pleased overall with the results. Mayo-Rochester has an outstanding shoulder surgeon. I am 77, by the way. Younger people might recover faster.

I am having mine Wed the 18th of Aug 2021 for the left shoulder replacement surgery with a reverse method since I have fake knees and though I get along ok with them I do use my arms just a bit to get up. What did you do wrong so I don't do it? I live in a rural area...

@jamy - how did your surgery go? If you are still checking in here, I would love to know about your progress. I am having my reverse right TSR on Oct 21, and I feel I have a lot to learn about shoulders, even though I have had both knees successfully replaced. I live in a rural area as well, but my surgeon has an excellent reputation locally and the follow up care and physical therapy were very good in my past experience. Husband and I go in for a personal pre-op presentation by PT on what to expect from TSR tomorrow, so I'll get a chance to ask a lot of questions.

I'm about 11 months out from having had reverse shoulder replacement. My only suggestion is get a nerve block.... Mine lasted about 6 days which meant pretty much pain free...you control how much pain relief you get by adjusting the block. I have pretty much total range of motion and am working with a trainer to build up strength. I use my shoulder/arm for everything with no limitations. YEAH!

@itsally and @jamy, I would like to thank you for your updated version of a TSR. It certainly appears that there have been quite a few improvements in the preparation for this surgery as well as the recovery process. Mine was done in 2014 which seems like so long ago. And yet......I also have enjoyed a pleasant and encouraging recovery.

I am most impressed by the pre-surgery education that is now available for patients and their families. When I had my TKR two weeks ago, my surgeon invited me and my life partner to come and visit with him to watch a video. Now they make these pre-op presentations appropriate for and available to patients and their families. My memory of the recent video presentation for the TKR is that it was introduced by the surgeon and he could stop and review any issue as requested.

Knowledge is power......and this appears to be another way to increase and enhance the preparation for a surgical event.

May you have happiness and the causes of happiness..
Chris

I had my shoulder replaced 5 years ago no problems until now. My left shoulder is starting to have sharp pain when I move it. How do you know if it is from surgery or something new?

It’s been two years since both shoulders were done via reverse shoulder replacement surgery. I can now swing dance again. And I’m 78.

@civnedlaw Is your left shoulder the one that was helped by the surgery? Please think back a search your memory for any unusual injury like a fall or crash into a door jam. I fell down 16 stairs and thankfully missed damaging the "surgery" shoulder. However, I do know that I have felt some crackling at times in that shoulder and have scheduled a time with my MFR therapist to investigate and remove whatever the restriction happens to be.

Secondly, and if your clinician recommends, have an MRI of the shoulder with the sharp pain. I would be very careful until you have answers to your question. If recommended, use ice and heat to temper the pain. Does it help to wear a sling or immobilizer of some kind?

How do the sharp pains move on out at this time? Pain medication? Physical therapy?

May you be free of suffering and the causes of suffering.
