My son is actually growing shiitakes and hoping to grow oysters. I love mushrooms and should learn which are edible. How did you learn?

We’ve grown several types of mushrooms from kits. That’s fun and also yummy! I’m really only sure of two types that I’m comfortable enough picking in the wild and eating. But I know there are so many around us in the woods that are edible.
There’s a naturalist in my hometown who gives lectures and takes people for ‘shroom expeditions. I’d love to hang around with him sometime to learn more. I’m betting you have a university extension office around who has educational material on mushrooms or there’s a lot online. I also have an Audubon book of fungus…just for a quick reference. I just like taking the pics. There are so many odd ones. There’s a Ravenel’s stink horn pick I’d love to post but it really looks inappropriate. 😂

I actually took a mushroom hike workshop about a hundred years ago. Lol. We walked the forest and they taught us which ones were valuable as we have mushroom buyers all over the place in winter. We have truffles too. I once read somewhere that we provided around 40% of all high end wild mushrooms in the US. That was a few years ago. I will only collect a few types, and I don’t sell them, I cook them, or dry them and cook them. These days the funny fungi are the most valuable, I guess people just need a break from reality. Lol. I won’t even touch those no matter how beautiful they are.
