Hi willows, Your “is the car running or not” story is probably only one of the many stories we could swap. Lifetime tinnitus can be entertaining at times. On a more serious note, thank you for telling me about ATA. I didn’t know of them. The closest we have come to explaining my particular problem came from my ENT doctor. I have always suffered from moderate hearing loss that has progressed to severe with the years. I had an inner ear CT scan. It found a quite rare condition called superior semicircular canal dehiscence. In short it means that there is no bone protecting the fluids in the canal. Symptoms include extreme tinnitus, headaches, balance problems & hearing loss. Do you have hearing problems or any of these beyond the tinnitus? There is very little information on SSCD and no cure as yet. You tip about ATA will hopefully lead me to more info. Thanks again

I have never heard of your condition. It’s amazing how many things can happen to a body either human or animal for that matter. I guess the more complex the organism the more chances for malfunction. In answer to your question, in addition to tinnitus I also have moderate hearing loss and hyperacusis. The latter is a condition where any noise above my decibel tolerance results in rapid recruitment of sound that appears to me as though it is painful and much louder than it actually is. For example I can’t go to a restaurant where there is lots noise, or a party where everyone is having fun talking and laughing, or walking along a street where there is lots of traffic ( where isn’t there a lot of traffic, I live in Montreal)!
Anyway, about the “car running » when I get out I put my hand on the hood to see if it feels like it is silent. Otherwise, if you put it in your garage and don’t check, you might get carbon monoxide seeping into the house. Another hazard of having hearing problems.
