I’ve just been diagnosed with osteoporosis. Does anyone out there have Hashimotos as well as osteo? Doctor prescribed Risedondrate Delayed Release but I’m also taking Levothyroxine (for my thyroid) I’m 56 and 120lbs....and depressed with the diagnosis. I have not started the Rosedondrate yet. There must be a better way that actually works.

Hello @justdiagnosed and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. A new diagnosis is difficult and it is good of you to acknowledge your feelings on the matter.

Members who also have dual diagnosis include @suemer @cctoo and @cherriann who may be able to provide you with support by way of their experiences.

What concerns you most as you embark with both Rxs?

I have Hashimotos and have taken synthroid for many years with satisifactory results. I also have osteoporosis and took Fosamax for a number of years. I stopped taking Fosamax for while due to increasing side-effects of aching in the groin area, and increasing pain and deep aching in lower legs and feet. I experienced some stomach issues on the days I took Fosamax. In a matter of several months after stopping Fosamax the side-effects subsided. At my doctor's recommendation at a later time I again resumed taking Fosamax, but the side effects came back quickly and I stopped taking it completely. There are other drugs that are available, but I chose not to commit to drugs that I'd have to stay on permanently. My numbers were not good, but did improve slightly while taking Fosamax, but the side effects along with the documented possible dangers of this drug were the deciding points in my decision. I have not taken anything for osteoporosis in a number of years and feel well and live an active life, but I do eat healthfully and faithfully exercise for bone health. I am careful in my daily life, trying to choose activities that do not put my bones at risk, etc. I want to strongly emphasize that anyone else's choice on whether to treat their osteoporosis and how to treat it will be different for each of you. Your lifestyle, medical background, etc., all need to be considered. Very important, do your research and read experiences and reviews of others with osteoporosis
