Collagen for osteoporosis?
My friend's medical doctor has her take collagen for her bones. I decided to try it and wondered if anyone knows more than I do about this.

Hello @cpb Collagen is a protein component of all connective tissues in the body including bone and skin. When bone is formed or healing as in the case of a fracture, a collagen fibrous network is laid down first and then populated with the cells that create bone. If you eat meat in your diet, you are eating collagen. Bone has to have a tensile strength so it has a bit of flex for shock absorption which it gets from collagen. It sounds like your friend had some good advice from her physician.
I'd like to learn more myself.
Morning Lynn...I like that more info and interest is being directed towards emelorating our bone conditions..instead of having that sinking "oh well" feelings about what we, as patients , we can do for ourselves that not only improves our bone density, but gives us back our power to seek out reasons why we've lost so much bone.
I'm on the search for this reason myself. There has to be a point where something went wrong in my body to cause this amount of bone loss. I'm going to be seeing an Endocrinologist and get as many tests done to try and find the impetus....otherwise I'm just adding to a bucket with a hole in it...leaking out all the bone nutrients that could be going to my bone health.
MD's seem all too happy to write a script for whatever ails us...while not really seeing 'us' as an important component in regaining our bone health and overall health as well....it really is up to us!
I'm not anti-drug...just a seeker of knowledge..wherever that will lead me.
If using a trampoline helps and the data seem reasonable..then do it! If changing one's diet to a more mediterranean one would help..then change! Add in more colors...organic...it doesn't cost more when one eats this way...my costs have gone down now that I eat what I buy and buy small amounts at a time to make sure it's as fresh as I can get. Probiotics are easy to find and enjoy these days..very good for our 'gut'...grass fed dairy....come on folks...I challenge you all reading these to do something different each day for 'you'...get into the solution and out of the worry that's keeping you back from enjoying your lives. I'm here...let's do this! Hugs.....
good to get this kind of feedback. I've also been taking the 5 types of collagen each am with my coffee...adding this into all the aleloritive changes I'm making. One has to do their own homework here..as there are a lot of these products out there..and some are pure hype. I've been doing the collagen for about 4 months now and I can see a difference in the skin on my hands..smoother. ...as well as the skin on my hands in general. Not looking for miracles here...just wanting to aid in what I'm lacking to be a better 'me' at 76 1/2....

I have my own homeopathic & MD ordered regimine myself. I take vitamins K & B-12, because I am a regular laxative and fiber user. Frequent laxatives use can deplete vitamins K & B-12 synthesized in the large intestine and cause anemia or heart problems. I take vitamins, D3, A, calcium 1200 mg per day, all ordered by my team of physicians. Vitamin E for skin, hair, and nails, vitamins iron and muti-vitamins with iron. I also have hormone therapy estrogen & progesterone for bone and muscle health. Recall that estrogen is the primary component in bone matrix for women. I request by physician an order for a full blood panel and include an Ionized Calcium (check for signs of bone cancer & CA + 125 to check for signs of ovarian cancer, since I take estrogen as a 65 year old woman. I take diclofenac for joint swelling and pain when I need it. I have never smoked, used illegal drugs, no family history of female reproductive or breast cancer or heart disease. However, I am taking a risk, but so do smokers. I'd rather still be walking. I'm an insurance agent and I have really good insurance to support Medicare, so my out of pocket expenses are minimal. Glad to hear from someone taking collagen. I bought some and took it only a couple of times but you have encouraged me to get it out and start taking it again in the morning and hopefully kept it up for four months or more. Thanks for the push. I assume 761/2 means 1944?
My wife and I both take 2 scoops of Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides with our morning coffee daily. She used to have terrible nails and has noticed a great improvement since we've been taking it more than a year now. It's helped my nails and skin also but I still bruise easily from thin skin. My nails are not as brittle as they use to be and look healthier.

I have been taking the LiveWell brand of collagen peptides (grass fed and pasture raised) with 19 amino acids for about a year and a half.
I put a scoop in my coffee every day. I have seen a difference in skin and hair. My nails were always strong.
Nice to know that it helps osteoporosis (which I have) . I don’t have any joint pain but used to get occasional right hip aches or pain and have not had any in a very long while. The collagen is in addition to supplements like curcumim, B complex plus, D3, Synergy K (all from Pure Encapsulations) and magnesium glycinate at night. I am conscious of what I eat.
I am not on any osteoporosis drugs but attend 3 senior gym classes a week, walk 2 to 2.5 miles daily and have a routine at night.
I am 80 and I feel great (except the Florida humidity just wipes me out).
The gym classes focus a lot on balance, stretching and strength with some cardio. I do core at night. Our gym teacher who is 81 and in great shape doesn’t want any of us to fall. I have seen too many deaths in my class in the past 8 years that I have been attending and gone to too many funerals…so many of them from falls.
My routine , diet and supplements work for me but I am always interested to read what others are doing.

yes..76 and a half...oh shoot..closer than that now...oh well...in my mind I'm not that old at all! I have been doing Clinical Effects for about 3 months now....I feel it's helping with everything collagen does do for us. Glad I inspired you! we all need that!
glad to hear that you both are feeling and seeing good results! Us older folk need at least 9-12 grms a day of this....
