← Return to Iron Depletion in Blood related to COVID?

After reading all of your reports and comments here, I decided to look at VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System https://wonder.cdc.gov/controller/datarequest/D8) and search for low hemoglobin or low ferritin reports. There were 420,000 adverse events reported out of 330,000,000 Covid vaccine doses administered. Of those 778 reported low hemoglobin or ferritin, 324 of those from the Pfizer vaccine. We cannot tell from this simple search exactly when, in relation to injection, these events were reported. Now is there a cause/effect proven by reporting. To make a comparison, I also looked at reduced ferritin/hemoglobin in VAERS for the Shingrix and Quadravalent flu vaccines (with far fewer doses delivered than Covid) and found 23 for each, out of 30-40 thousand VAERS reports.

I understand that this is undoubtedly underreported, especially since the discovery is coming some time after the vaccine. So, I would say that there appears to be some indication that some people may experience lower hemoglobin at a point after vaccination. In addition, it is known that some people show lower hemoglobin after having the Covid virus (even after a mild case sometimes.)

Perhaps, at some point we will come to a better understanding of all the interactions between Covid infections, the vaccine, and our bodies.

Has anyone experienced either
1) dangerously low hemoglobin of ferritin after vaccination, or
2) numbers that are not recovering?
Sue

I would be curious to know my actual hemoglobin when I was having soa with exertion and restless leg symptoms. When my s/s had cleared my hgb was 11.7 and that is when I ended up checking my labs.I never considered that I needed lab work until after i was denied for blood donation.

my ferritin is a 3, almost undetectable. The hematologist gets concerned under 30, normal can be up to 300. It will take month to see the recovery. I will let you know, first iron infusion is Wednesday. And what worse, is I have to go through a prep and endoscopy and colonoscopy to prove there is no internal bleeding. I have no GI pain, no occult blood. So maybe it is the long-haul effect of covid on the gut. Because it affected abdominal symptoms terrible for me for 9 month. But I have been normal now for 9 month and ferritin continues to drop.

My daughter who is 19 has had similar issues. We just made our second trip to the ER. First time she was at 5.8. She experienced other adverse affects after the second dose of Moderna at the end of February but the low Hemaglobin became noticeable in June. Yesterday was the second time. The hemotologist is give her iron infusions starting next week. She wants her to have upper and lower GI scoped. We believe it's the vaccine. She was healthy before this.

Hi, all my numbers plummeted, iron, iron saturation and all my CBC’s. I got the CBC’s to come up, but am struggling with the iron. After the next blood test, I will request an iron infusion. I am so tired..

On 9/4/2021 I had my 2nd Pfizer Covid Vaccine. I started feeling fatigued, short of breathe and light headed. Went to my local urgent care my hemoglobin level was 6.8 - I was referred to the Emergency Room where I required 2 pints of blood. Nothing has changed in my daily routine to cause this. I had my annual physical in April 2021 my hemoglobin was 12.9.

I was reading through these comments to see if what I'm experiencing is common. I just received lab results showing ferritin of 5, obviously very low. I have no other symptoms and that test was ordered, along with magnesium, as I have restless legs at night. I donate blood 3 or so times a year and my last one was almost 7 weeks prior to this lab test. I always have great iron and never a problem with donating. I did have the Pfizer vaccines (both) in April. I didn't think about any connection but reading through these I am not sure. My doctor will see the results on Monday and I'm sure she will direct me on what to do. I did have a full labs ordered but this one came back first. I'm very curious to see what my other levels are on the other labs. I eat plenty of iron, in fact I looked and my cereal alone contained 100% rda, plus I eat other high iron foods during the day, so this can't be diet. I am so confused.

I was hospitalized recently and bloodwork was run. It came back showing my iron was extremely low as well as my red blood cell count. I was vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine. My bloodwork taken in July before I was vaccinated showed no issue with my iron level or red blood cell count. I wouldn't be so dismissive of a link between the vaccine and issues with iron and red blood cell levels.

Had my Pfizer vaccine 1 and 2 in Sep 2021. In December I was having issues with my tongue, burning and nothing tasting good. Went to my Doc in Jan 2022 and had blood test All red blood cell counts low. Hemoglobin - 8.3. Hemacrit - 30.4. MCV and MCH low. First time ever having this issue and I am 76. Get blood tests twice a year. Referred to Hematologist. First test on 2/4/22 Iron 13 and Saturation was 3. Had an Infusion a few days later. Second test 3/14/22, Iron 22 and Saturation 6%. All these problems started after the Phizer vaccines in September so do I blame an unapproved vaccine, definitely. I still work and my company required me to take the vaccine or I would not have taken it. I would not take it again for sure.

Sue, in your post (dated July 20, 2021) you stated that, "There were 420,000 adverse events reported out of 330,000,000 Covid vaccine doses administered. Of those 778 reported low hemoglobin or ferritin, 324 of those from the Pfizer vaccine.

Would you have a current update on these numbers? I would like to report them to my hematologist (who is currently giving me iron infusions).
Thank you

Currently my RDW is 19%, MCHC is 30, MCH is 24.5, my Ferritin Level is 9 and my iron St percentage is 9 well below the reference range of 30 to 44%. I too have donated blood, I am up to 8 gallons and I have never had a problem until after the Moderna shot. Receiving the shot was the worst mistake of my life.
