Gabapentin Question:
Good morning, all: I am asking this question to the largest group of you who may be on gabapentin. I started 6 weeks ago on 300, 3x a day but needed more relief so am on 600, 600, and 900 for what I think may be SFN, but will get my formal diagnosis next week. I have just developed a metallic taste in my mouth and my tongue is very red. (My dentist ruled out any real dental concerns.) My question: did any of you switch to a better pain med (such as Lyrica or an antidepressant) that took away your pain but did not give you the metallic taste? I want to present alternatives to my neurologist at my follow-up since I'm afraid he will dismiss it as an unfortunate side effect. Will appreciate all your help. Many thanks.

I'm assuming that your tongue is not swollen & that your not on antibiotics.
Did the red tongue & taste start right away or soon after starting Gabapentin? I would contact a pharmacist and ask if your symptoms are potential side effects. You might even go see an ENT doc or just phone your Neurologist.
Gabapentin is normally a very well-tolerated medication despite all its potential side effects.
If it is a side effect I wonder if it will react like many others do and decrease in severity or go away entirely within weeks to months.
I have been on epilepsy forums for years but haven't heard of Gabapentin causing these problems.
I hope you will keep us informed.
Best of luck to you,
Jake
