Living with pain

Posted by bear338 @bear338, Jun 24, 2021

I have lived with some type of pain almost my hole life first as a child then as a adult which I did to my self because of happened to me as a child but maybe that’s why I am still here either I am to stupid to give up or my past has made it possible for me to endure the pain I am in now the problem is that I know that I have a device that could and did stop my pain for 21 years until my doctor turned it off with every telling me what he did or why so I now wait for my new doctor appointment but that is not until the sixth of July all I can say is ask about everything before they do anything to you because the alternative is hoping that the person won’t harm you . Because you are the one who will be living with what ever they did not them, I know that this seams hostile and it is but it is also a warning of things that could happen.

@kenc Those certainly are fair results to hope for. If you are so inclined, please let me know your impression after watching the Mayo Clinic Pain Rehab video. I would be interested to learn how you feel it compares with your previous program.
Thank you,
Rachel

I watched the video and it was very informative on explaining neuropathic pain and peoples' reaction to it. However, I did not see any explanation of the the PRC process, just a brief explanation that it is available.

@kenc It sounds like you watched one of the links I provided, Dr. Sletten's you tube video presentation on central sensitization. I'm glad you felt it gave great explanation of the neuropathic pain and people's reaction to it.

Earlier in our conversation I provided a link to Mayo's Pain Rehabilitation Center. Here it is again for good measure.

You will find an overview and core components of the rehab program. What concerns you most about attending a program like this? Are there any specific areas you feel you need the most?

The biggest issue is the distance to the clinics, because I live in the St. Louis area. The pain is, so I have been told, is neuropathic pain. The pain is in the abdomen and rectal areas.

Hi Ken. I'm so sorry you experience such neuropathic pain. It must be awful for you. Are there any current ways that help you handle your pain? Are you able to calm it by using any specific techniques?

Yes, distance certainly can be an issue. It's unfortunate that you are not close to a Mayo Clinic. I found myself challenged with distance as I live in NY and had no clue how me getting to any of the Mayo locations was going to work. I chose Jacksonville, FL, PRC, where Dr. Sletten teaches. I had to strategize. I changed insurance plans so I would have out of network coverage through my Medicare plan. Paying a higher priced monthly insurance premium was well worth it as I had zero co-pays. I was very blessed to have some financial assistance from family for my flight, 3 week hotel stay and food. It was a big undertaking, but extremely worth the investment in my future well being and changed my life for the better. It really was awe-inspiring for me.

If you feel Mayo PRC is worth it for you, do you have any strategies you can think of to help get you there?

@kenc I have had neuropathic pain most of the time since birth ---maybe conception---. Several years ago I stumble upon the best palliative care for Neuropathy. Turmeric, but limit your use if you try it. I put about a quarter-teaspoon of common turmeric in 8oz of water, no more than 3x /day. Turmeric is a blood thinner. It may work for you, it may not, but it has for me. oldkarl

Probably can if I decide to take the treatment.

Need a better understanding of the treatment's long term success rate to eliminate or reduce pain.

Thank you. I attended a similar program at Barnes Jewish Hospital Pain Mgt Ctr, but did not experience any reasonable positive results. However, Again, thank you and I will review the information on link you provided.

Hello, i have a question regarding this program..if this what pmd’s referring when they talk about their ‘FRP’ or RFP’ program? It’s and 8 week daily program that Work Comp bullies us into? Ive been a PMP since 1996. They have tapered my meds back so far they no longer my pain nor did they ever. Having been on the same dose of pmds for 15 years withou one problem makes these programs sound like another way for big business to capitalize on our suffering. I’m sorry, but back to my question, can you please explain a little more about this? Thank you. Pam Iles

@jstbrznby Hello, welcome to Connect Pam. Thank you for joining the conversation about pain management programs. You have responded to @kenc. Are you asking about the program he attended at Barnes Jewish Hospital, or Mayo Clinic's Pain Rehabilitation Program that I spoke of?
