Kegels — I agree that it is a good start. But what is also needed also is learning how to contract your stomach muscles. Suck in and hold a bit and then release. Repeat! Put a soft ball between your knees and squeeze / hold a bit. Those are good starting exercises.

Kegels are more for urinary tract issues, whereas bowels require stomach control.
