Rib pain under right breast and back after eating

Posted by alicat @alicat, Jan 27, 2019

Since September 2018 I have had right rib pain in front and in my back. I have been checked for kidney stones and gallbladder issues which all came back normal. I do have an ulcer without bacteria that was almost healed (Beginning of December 2018) I am on prescription Nexium, gave me antibiotics just in case. After I eat (today scrambled eggs and 1/2 biscuit) I gag, sometimes I do throw up a little. Any ideas? I'm tired of hurting and not eating.

Never at night, but as the day goes on it would get worst. So I bought the tens unit and it helps. Because I had the ulcer at the same time as the tumor I cannot say if I had ulcer pain or not. I never have pain on the left, mostly the back side of my ribs which radiate to my upper back below my shoulder blade, sometimes in my upper hip. I hope this helps

I had the pain before the ulcer, but I did not know I had an ulcer, so Cannot tell you if it was related or not. It just started slowly, so not sure if it was related to the ulcer or the tumor. I wish I was more help.

Nearly 1 year ago, I began having periodic extreme pain in my right upper abdomen that radiated to my chest and back. Several years earlier, in 2011 I had my gallbladder removed- it was filled with stones and infected. Three doctors later and several tests showed a blockage in my bile duct. Had a procedure to remove a stone. All was well until yersterday when symptoms returned. Now my symptoms are severe to moderate pain. Worse when I eat and lay down shortly after OR if I bend over. Pain is excruciating. Lots of belly gurgling right after I eat. Diet doesn’t seem to matter - it’s what I do after I eat that seems to cause the pain. Low level lower back pain, with sharp radiating pain in upper back. I’ve scheduled a dr appt with a gastroenterologist- same who did my bile duct surgery. Of note, the stone was large enough that the dr had to snip the bile duct sphincter to remove it. Is it possible to have grown another stone. Thankfully, I am retired. I could not fuction at a job with this level of pain. Three different doctors - three different prescriptions. I have taken none of them. Any similar stories?

My understanding is that 90% of ALL ulcers are caused by HELIOBACTER Pylori why hasn't anyone advised of this in this series? Like to know could I be mistaken? Further taking a significant amount of Nexium or other PPI could temporarily heal your ulcer---until you withdraw. Further, and I could be mistaken, I am NOT a clinician, just a dedicated reader, The PPI and antacid or Famotine could give you a false negative on the test. The radiation assay test is the most accurate. If it is H.P. then which antibiotics are best in the midwest...like around Rochester, Minn? I had a scope after taking a lot of PPI and antacids and the ulcers were somewhat healed over. And i see nothing on the tests results indicated they even tested for HP.

@joelucido2 - Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! We are not clinicians, but people who have gone through similar things and we share information that can be very helpful.
You are correct, the majority of ulcers are caused by H.pylori. This is a relatively new discovery. In the past people with severe ulcers had part of the stomach removed.
Did the Gastroenterologist who performed the scope discuss the positive and negative findings?
I have been tested so many times over the years- always negative. It is possible that I had it initially, but I was taking frequent antibiotics for other ailments.
Maybe you could contact this physician again to find out if you were tested or biopsies taken.
Do you still have similar symptoms as before the ulcers?

I was getting stomach pain at night while sleeping. I had a bleeding ulcer and H Pylori. They cauterized my small intestine where the bleed was with the scope. I took antibiotics and it cleared up. No more pain and along with my new low acid diet I feel great.

Sounds very similar to some of my symptoms and I was diagnosed with Mesenteric Panniculitis.
