What's outside of your picture window today?

Hi Laurie @artist01, they sure are! The bigger, the better, lol. I discovered the breed 4 years ago when I adopted 2 females part Flemish Giant. My grey one is a pure breed. He weighs twice as much as the girls do. They love him. In fact so do our dogs. All the animals provide great companionship for me. They are all rescues and help to distract me from my health issues. The dogs keep an eye on me everywhere I go.

@avmcbellar You're so fortunate to have your pets! I really miss all of my tribe. Back in the day, before GCA struck, I had 2 dogs, a cat, and an African Grey parrot. All but one was a rescue. Later, I began fostering greyhounds and chihuahuas until they were ultimately placed in loving homes through their rescue associations. I ended up adopting one little chihuahua senior, thirteen year old Pedro. Just couldn't part with him. 😊

@avmcbellar. Wow, what a gorgeous Flemish Giant, and what a giant he is!! He looks like a real cuddlebunny too.

@loribmt Laurie is right. They are trainable. I knew that when I had first gotten rabbits as a teenager but never Flemish Giants until recently. I have fallen in love with the breed. He has fine fur. We sometimes refer to him as a “fur ball”. The girls weigh 10lbs each but are a mix of breeds. Their fur is coarse compared to his. They all roam free in the living room, know their names, and are litter box trained. I love it when they jump on the couch to be near me to get petted. He is heavy but can run and do his binkys, lol.

@avmcbellar Awwwww! What precious Floooofs!! They are just adorable. He is a big boy for sure and I can see why you fell in love with the breed! What a enjoyable way to get your fur-fix. That’s what I’m sorely missing…stroking furry pets. Not in the cards right now but hopefully soon. I’d really consider a bunny like this!

Hi Laurie @artist01. You did a wonderful thing to help the animals while you could. The animals do gives us better coping skills through their unconditional love. It is not easy for me but they do push me to get up to do things. I always keep all the animals clean and give them what they need. Besides, I have a variety of foods for the rabbits since I eat a lot of veggies and fruits plus I have my outdoor veggie garden I added this year. Besides herbs, I give them a few cherry tomatoes and weeds from the yard for treats. It has become routine for me to go outside everyday. I have an abundance of food from my yard the rabbits can feast on throughout the year. Why let it go to waste? I am recycling, lol. I use the contents of their litter box to fertilize my plants. All works well. I believe in helping animals, big or small. I rescued a puppy chihuahua mix and later rescued a full chihuahua female for him as a companion. All the animals get along well although the Flemish Giant is the biggest. My stepson calls him Bunzilla, lol. The wabbit is so mild mannered. Nothing at all like Godzilla and the violence associated with him.
Doesn’t your senior center have a community pet like a dog or cat? Maybe you can make a suggestion. I am sure other residents would like that too. I knew a few rehabilitation centers or nursing homes locally that had community pets. Does anyone bring in animals at your senior center on a regular basis to visit? Perhaps look into that. Remember it may be a more difficult time now with covid. Best wishes. Toni

@loribmt I certainly got my fur fix. He has very soft and fine fur. Rabbits are very clean animals constantly grooming themselves and other rabbits. They are very social always bunching up together. All three have bonded.
I had a very difficult time finding a Flemish Giant locally. They have become very popular house pets. I went to a rabbit show about 3 hours away just to see them. There we saw all kinds of bunnies and what the judges looked for in selecting the winners. Before the show I had contacted a few breeders that had registered. One breeder in particular had brought the bunny we ended up getting because the bunny was undesirable to enter into the show. His coloring was not the right shade and his tail was crooked. He was a year old and perfect for us as a house pet. These creatures reach maturity at around 18 months old. I enjoyed watching him. The day we got him he was so happy because he wouldn’t stop running around. I had never seen a rabbit run around non stop as he did. I had the girls in a cage because I wanted him to adjust to them. He had been in a small cage at the show, probably prohibited from having contact with other rabbits. Pictures from the time we got him. I am holding him(sorry, didn’t like my photo). This was 18 months ago, He came from North Carolina.

Thanks @loribmt. If you ever decide to adopt a bunny know that it makes a difference where they came from. Rabbits are afraid and always on the alert because they are prey to most animals. He is so docile and loving. The girls on the other hand are more edgy and easily frightened which is understandable because I had met the previous owner and saw the living conditions. The girls lived in an apartment amongst a big cat and year old big dog which was hyper. All these animals roamed free in the house. The rabbits were the smallest. At our home they have gotten better adjusted but once in a while they jump or become alert after hearing a sound. They make a good security system though. They thump to alert me of any danger. His thumps are extremely loud, lol. One time we got delivery of our mail at the front door. It never happened before. As soon as the doorbell rang all 3 rabbits were thumping, lol. The rabbits have better hearing than we do with those ears. He thumped several times and sure enough a critter was outside. One time there was a raccoon and another the neighbor’s cat.
