I relate to this post on SSHL and have similar questions concerning how CROS and BICROS aids can help me. I had sudden single sided hearing loss on left ear approx six years ago and have 'gotten by' . My right ear hearing was normal for a 65+ male, but I haven't had it checked since the initial event and may have had some loss since then. My left ear tested "dead' ... no detectable hearing. My main goal is improved understanding of conversations in noisy environments. Do some CROS or BICROS have better 'Noise Cancellation and filtering' than others ? Do some make use of directional microphones? ... My initial interaction with local hearing aid services is that they didn't relate to the issues of SSHL. I would like to have some assurance that the professional I reach out to has some experience with SSHL and has a general plan of action for a person with my condition before I invest time and money for a solution. Looking for suggestions and direction and understanding of possible solutions.

Has anything been mentioned to you about a cochlear implant on that 'dead' ear? In most cases the hearing nerve is not dead, but is not being stimulate due to the cochlea being damaged. A hearing aid on the better ear and a cochlear implant on the other one may be worth looking into.

I had a cochlear implant on my poorer ear 16 years ago. I use both the CI and a hearing aid. They work wonders together for me.

See if there is a cochlear implant center in your area. It's worth checking out.
