Forteo vs. Tymlos: Which did you choose?

The symptoms I was having from Tymlos were constant excessive hand trembling. My lips and the area around my lips also trembling, lost over half of my hair, developed black and blue marks on my thighs and hands that looked like bruises. I also had nausea to the extent where I was not able to eat. Within a few days of my doctor taking me off Tymlos the trembling stopped and the hair loss slow down and no more Black and blue marks. Additionally, I developed a lot of fat around my stomach area. I am very slim at 5’4” weighing 115 pounds and now have a huge belly. I also had the rapid heartbeat (posted on their website as a possible side effect) when I injected which didn’t bother me as much as the other side effects. I did discuss these side effects with a Tymlos Representative who said that they were aware that women complained about hair loss but it’s not listed on their website as a possible side effect. The Tymlos Representative said they had not heard of the trembling or black and blue marks. I should be starting on Forteo next week and hope I don’t get the same side effects because I will also have to go off that medication.

Good afternoon @mml1, thanks for responding. No wonder you are alarmed. Those side effects need some explaining. I had no side effects with Tymlos. I just transferred to Prolia because my 2 years was up. I received the first Prolia infusion or injection last Friday. I have not noticed any side effects from that medication.

When I did my research on Forteo, I found that one of the major differences between Forteo and Tymlos is that one of them uses a natural component and the other one uses a synthetic component. Don’t you wish I could remember? I am now calling Apple to work on my laptop. If you haven’t found out about the Forteo/Tymlos component differences by the time I get my computer fixed......I will join the search.

After using it for 28 days I took myself off of it because of the side effects I was having which were nearly all of them. When I first inject I immediately get dizzy and my heart starts racing and then I have to go lie down and then once the dizziness passes I feel tension in my head also the nauseaness -I felt like I wanted to vomit all the time I also had loss of hair and the shaky hands and for me being diagnosed with osteopenia not osteoporosis it just was not worth it that’s my humble opinion.

In reply to artscaping....@migizi. I wanted you to know that I take Prolia regularly and do well with this medication (there have been many osteoporosis medications that I experienced side effects necessitating having to stop them). Good luck and be well❤️

I am very concerned about starting Tymlos. There seems to be a wide range of side effects and what is considered a good effect from its use? Where does Prolio fit into this category? Is there a natural way to combat osteoporosis ?

This is a good question for all aging women. My opinion to your questions are based on my own experience and recent study for BSN prerequisites requirements. There are some things you can do if you start early to slow the degeneration of bone. Your genetics play a huge factor. Vitamins D3, A, K2, and calcium tablets are a good start. I would suggest have your doctor conduct a risk assessment with you, such as family history of cancer, high risk employment (such as being exposed to toxins which can cause cancer), smoking, blood cultures, and other early predictors. Prolio is for men, so I wouldn't suggest it if you are female. Exercise is key, it builds strength in bones. Females have more options for osteoporosis depending on risk factors and genetic tolerance. In addition to vitamins, they can add hormone therapy. Recall that estrogen is the #1 factor in bone matrix and very important in heart health. It is not for everyone and depending on products it could wreak havoc on your body. Talk to an Endocrinologist to see what your risks are. I personally don't like injections, and wouldn't choose Tymlos.

One important factor I have incorporated in aging is wearing a corset. It's not about sporting a small waist, although it was my primary reason for purchasing a Maidenform garment with metal support. I found that it had far reaching benefits. After I became used to the garment and reduced my weight around my middle, I found that my posture greatly improved. I wore it while working in a hospital as a CNA at age 64. It gave me the best back support I've ever received. I now wear them daily with no adverse effect. It supports my spine and prevents curvature of the back. Getting used to it was not fun, was the down side. But, I'm still standing erect and walking. Best.
