Help me understand. Clear cutting swaths, clearing areas but not destroying the entire area? Isn't that a good thing re prevention of fires, etc and in Florida, the timber companies plant the land they harvest so we don't loose all the trees. and of course they don't run out of future harvests....please explain what your permit allows you to do?

Hope you do have a new nest and take some pics to share....I must learn how to do that. blessings, elizabeth

@ess77 We live in timber country. As they clear an area, there are trees that do not meet the size needed, or trees that have to be cut down to clear a road or make a fire break. The BLM [Bureau of Land Management] will issue a certain number of permits, designating a specific area, for private citizens to gather the piles they create with these smaller trees. They have had their branches removed and are stacked. Sometimes on a hillside, sometimes in the bramble of blackberries. Permit holders are allowed 2 cords, and you have 3 weeks to gather what you want. We always go with at least 2 other people. There is nobody overseeing us re safety, it is all on us. I am certified in first aid, as is the neighbor. We have ham radio for communication, and mark coordinates in an emergency. Yes, the timber companies here also replant, and their work helps undergrowth keep controlled.
