Hi. Im am a 20yold female. And not feeling great lately.
So. I am constantly feeling dizzy or light headed and weak. Mostly when i stand for a long time. Im constantly having stomach problems as well. They found h pylori but i don't think thats whats causing my pain and nausea after meals and drinking. I don't know whats wrong and am scated to get a second opinion.
My hemoglobin is usually low when they do blood tests and im usually really cold. Mostly my hands and feet. Fingernails turn purplish gray even when im not cold. What do i do?
@rinah20 It is always a good Idea to get a second opinion for such important issues.. There are so many variables and interactions.. Choose Credible, those with reputation.. don't mess around..
Like Ken said, I'd get a second opinion from another GI Dr. Having a EGD (upper endoscopy) is really a simple procedure and painless too. Don't be afraid of it. They give you knock out juice. Stay away from spicey foods, soda, alcohol, fried foods if you have heartburn. Did they put you on antibiotics?
@rinah20 you will notice I moved your post from today back into this discussion you allow you to continue to share additional details with the members who have joined in.
In reference to your H. pylori, I wanted to share the link below and highlight the section about when to see a doctor to keep tabs on that aspect of your health.
-Helicobacter pylori (H. plylori):
https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/h-pylori/symptoms-causes/syc-20356171
In this information, weight loss is mentioned so I am wondering if the dizziness and light-headed symptoms you are experiencing are somehow all connected to a lack of vital nutrients and vitamins due to poor absorption as a result of your stomach infection? I am not a medical expert, but just trying to provide some ideas for you to consider.
Did you have a blood test done that you could look back on to see if you were low or deficient in any areas outside of the hemoglobin that you mentioned was low?
@rinah20 I'm guess you know that low iron can cause a number of symptoms, many of which you've shared.
The following is an excerpt from the link I've provided below:
"Iron deficiency anemia signs and symptoms may include: Extreme fatigue. Weakness. Pale skin. Chest pain, fast heartbeat or shortness of breath. Headache, dizziness or lightheadedness. Cold hands and feet. Inflammation or soreness of your tongue. Brittle nails."
-Iron Deficiency Anemia:
https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/iron-deficiency-anemia/symptoms-causes/syc-20355034
Also from the article, but something I thought was worth pulling out is a list of iron-rich foods as well as foods high in Vitamin C which will aid in the absorption of the iron-rich foods:
Foods rich in iron include:
•Red meat, pork and poultry
•Seafood
•Beans
•Dark green leafy vegetables, such as spinach
•Dried fruit, such as raisins and apricots
•Iron-fortified cereals, breads and pastas
•Peas
Your body absorbs more iron from meat than it does from other sources. If you choose to not eat meat, you may need to increase your intake of iron-rich, plant-based foods to absorb the same amount of iron as does someone who eats meat.
Choose foods containing vitamin C to enhance iron absorption
You can enhance your body's absorption of iron by drinking citrus juice or eating other foods rich in vitamin C at the same time that you eat high-iron foods. Vitamin C in citrus juices, like orange juice, helps your body to better absorb dietary iron.
Vitamin C is also found in:
•Broccoli
•Grapefruit
•Kiwi
•Leafy greens
•Melons
•Oranges
•Peppers
•Strawberries
•Tangerines
•Tomatoes
Have you been actively addressing your low iron, or do you think that could be part of the problem with some of your symptoms?
@rinah20 Make sure that you take good multi-vitamins.. for a person so young its not usual but there is some nutrients missing..
The ER will cost big bucks. See a GI Dr. or primary care Dr. for lab tests or even a physical if you haven't had one. You might have a stomach ulcer.
I agree that you should be seen. If you have a nurse triage line you can call first or if that is part of the scheduling process, that might be helpful so they can identify if you should just go straight to the ED or if they can get you in ASAP, depending on how they read your symptoms in terms of risk.
@rinah20 will you please come back after calling and let us know what they advise and when you will be seen?
@rinah20 With the different symptoms you have, it may be better if you start with seeing an Internist/ General Practitioner. They have experience in many symptoms you have. It sounds as if the cause of your anemia has to be found as well as your faintness. You may be dehydrated, but there are also conditions where the blood pressure drops when you stand up. Your feeling cold fingers and feet could be a sign of thyroid hypoactivity - or even an autoimmune illness.
It would not be a good idea to go to the ER. The doctors there don't have the time to work you up properly- they are excellent to deal with urgent medical problems. I recommend that you find an Internist or GP/Family Physician to be evaluated.
