Anyone had a Patellofemoral (Partial) Joint Replacement?

I had a partial knee replacement 1 1/2 years ago which was never right I kept telling my surgeon my just sort of laughs at m ed and says it will get better, under went a malulation, and then a scope but no relief. Now I need a revision total knee due to losin6and twisting of unit after seeking another surgeon has anyone had to do this procedure if so what should I expect ?

@sloops, have you already had a partial knee replacement and are now needing a total knee replacement?

I have not had a partial knee replacement yet and am scheduled for a TKA August 30. My surgeon does not think that partial knee replacements are as successful as a total knee and, therefore, is suggesting a TKA. I had an arthroscopy for a meniscus tear and scraping of arthritis from my knee cap. I am 7 weeks out from that surgery and not recovering well. My surgeon wants me to wait 3 months to improve the outcome of a TKA. Most of my knee is in good shape, it’s just the knee caps. I am going to get a 2nd opinion. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

"Results of Patellofemoral Replacement
It is difficult to know exactly how long a patellofemoral replacement will last. The implant designs have changed significantly in the last decade, in hopes that better implants will lead to better results.

Unfortunately, there is not much long-term data, and we are really left with shorter follow-up. In most of the studies have been done, 80% to 90% of patients will have good results in the first decade after patellofemoral replacement; whether or not they will hold up longer than that is not understood.2

We also know that the most common reason that a patellofemoral replacement will not work well is not because of a problem with the implant, but rather a problem in the rest of the knee joint—the part that was not replaced. About 25% of patients will eventually require conversion of their partial patellofemoral replacement to a total knee replacement as a result of worsening arthritis in the other compartments of the knee.2

This is why the patients who have the best results from patellofemoral knee replacement are those patients who have specific problems with their kneecap, such as a previous patella fracture or problems with patellar tracking. These conditions can lead to early wear of the cartilage under the kneecap.

I shattered my patella in 2022, the repair failed and it rebroke in 2023. I have great knees. The spaces are perfect and there is no pain in that joint. However, my patella is painful, stiff, huge, deformed, entirely covered in what feels like crustaceans.

I am being encouraged to do this because it is only my patella. It also does not track properly in the groove. My gait is unstable and my body symmetry is off when I walk. (Thank you Apple Watch for telling me this!)

I believe I will be there ideal candidate for this surgery. Has anyone else had a situation like mine?

I had severe patella osteoarthritis, but otherwise knee was ok. Had patella replacement, now everything it great. Good luck

@meuniesu - how did you find a surgeon to do just the patella?? I have OA in patella but good everywhere else in the knee (well, also no meniscus) however, several surgeons (the one I chose is the most popular in South Orange County, California), and he says I only need a partial, but like most all knee surgeons, says I'll need a total at some point, and at 71 years old, should do a full..UGH!

@catheem I have had both knees replaced and am experiencing severe knee cap pain. I am going to a surgeon in south Orange County CA next week and am hoping to resolve patella or patellar tendon issue. Seems at this stage a total may be in your best interest. The surgical procedures are better for totals now that they do the jiffy knee ( if possible)
