Hi everyone. I've been reading your posts and my heart goes out to all of you. First, let me introduce myself. My name is Pam and I work in the Nicotine Dependence Center here at Mayo Clinic Rochester. I work specifically with the 8-day Residential Treatment Program. This program is designed for those who have struggled with quitting on their own, may feel they've tried everything, and are looking for a safe place to get away and truly focus on becoming tobacco free without the distractions of work, family, and other commitments. It's so important to take care of yourself. We all get wrapped up in wanting to take care of others but we need to remember to take care of ourselves first and then we're better equipped to take care of others. Most people don't realize there are places to come for treatment for tobacco dependence, and unfortunately there are only two in the country - the Mayo program and another in St. Helena, CA. You can find information on the Mayo Clinic program at http://www.mayoclinic.org/ndctreatment. Or if you want to talk to someone I'm happy to chat with you and answer any questions (507) 266-9392.

I am a lung cancer survivor and mentor with Connect.
I never smoked and I had lung cancer.

Through the healing process I met several people at the Mayo Nicotine Dependence Center. Everyone I have had the pleasure of meeting is wonderful, caring, respectful and most professional !

The Nicotine Dependence Center building location is on the Mayo Campus and has a unique history and is somewhat private.

The information and research is remarkable for everyone! It’s truly a unique education.

So if you are nicotine dependent or not stop by the 18th floor and take a look and learn
and get a quick lesson about Nicotine and the Big Tobacco Lawsuite that Mayo Clinic helped win! And see the big fish tank ...Everyone I refer has thanked me.

So think about putting that on your New Years resolution list!

I think you're right. No one can know what it's like until they're experiencing it. I'm glad you have this community for support.

We need more people like to to speak out! I commend you.

We need more lung awareness and education about our lungs!

We all know smoking is bad.

But what do people know about their amazing lungs?

Thank you for sharing.
You are brave!

I was just recently diagnosed with COPD. Still smoking and trying to quit. I don't know a whole lot about COPD except it's a lung disease. Does it still progress on after I quit smoking?

I've been reading up on it and found the answer! Yes! That was an ignorant question. My apologies.

Lorraine, there are no dumb questions! Where did you read more about COPD? Did you find a good website with information?
If you'd like to talk to other Connect members living with COPD, please pop over to this discussion:

Hi Desirea:
Lung Disease is never talked about in an educational way until there is a problem or unless perhaps you work in the medical field! After my shocking lung cancer diagnosis , I went running to the library and was disappointed at what little information was available
10 years ago!
So, why would we know everything about a lung disease like COPD or the like?

My dream for lung health is that more people like you will talk together, and bravely share their experience and previous knowledge about lung disease.

It took a well trained team before I was properly diagnosed. As scary as it was, Mayo Clinic saved my life!
Because teams all talk openly about lung disease and the facts, I never felt shamed because I had Lung Cancer.

Since my diagnosis there have been tremendous advances in helping patients find a better quality of life.

I’m so glad you found Connect. Welcome;-)

Hi @colleenyoung Thank You for replying. I get a newsletter called Medicalnet and they have so much information that it comes out more than once daily. Full of information. After my question to Connect I read an article in Medicalnet and was quite satisfied with the article. It's medicalnet.com and signup. I estimated that I am in stage 2 with COPD having mucus issues out of breath after 2 blocks of walking and coughing throughout the day. Connect is my only support system and thankful that I get feedback here. Happy Holidays!
