With MN legalizing some forms of cannabis therapy, what are the actual, real ramifications for our kids with Epilepsy?

REPLY

Can your child be diagnosed with generalized seizures and then begin to have what appears to be complex partial symptoms such as lip smacking. Is it possible to have both?

My daughters case is a mystery no Drs have been able to figure out her case or how to help her, we don't even have a definitive diagnosis. We are always looking to read, and listen. Would love to be able to figure out something for her.

Our daughter had her first set of seizures at 18months. We had her on five different medications, all that did not improve her seizures and altered behavior. We went med free from 3.5yrs to now, 5yrs old. Last week she had a very long tonic clonic and is back on a new and different medication. We already are seeing behavior changes.

We hate the medication. Are there more holistic approaches or medicines that do not affect behavior as much? They all seem to give her headaches and make her overly emotional. Seizures are scary enough but not being in control of her emotions is just has hard.

We have our child on lamictal. Is this safe for a five year old? We have read no one under sixteen.

My son had his firat seizure at 1mth of age. He developed infantile spasm at 4 mths of age. I'm interested in brain surgery but my local drs think I wont be a candidate. Can u tell that from just a eeg. A dr in Detroit does a eeg petscan combo that I would lov e to be apart of but he is on the other end of the states and doesn't take my insurance. Also my son remains undiagnosed at this point. Physically normal but mentally a 1mth old.

Yes, many AEDs we commonly use in kids are used off label, but Lamictal is very safe

Yes, diet and surgical therapies are other options if the medications are not working

Would be rare to have both types, but can happen. Most often the child has focal onset seizures, which could then spread to both sides of the brain. The seizure in that case is generalized but starts focally

We lack any good data on how effective cannabis is in pediatric epilepsy. Cannabis contains several agents, some of which are probably safe in kids, others which are probably not good for the developing brain. More research is needed
