so sorry to hear this. i find that anxiety does exacerbate my GERD cough, and stomach problems. like with all things, our minds affect our bodies. i don't mean this in any sort of way other than helpful, but have you tried meditation? i see it recommended for so many issues, and by so many people. and maybe make an appt with your GI doc and/or your internist. they can assess whether there is a problem, and allay your fears about it.
Thanks so much for listening
@sstone11 - Welcome to Mayo Connect!
I know the pain and discomfort you are having.
As @wendymb mentioned, I also feel that anxiety can worsen the symptoms. I have had GERD for years- sometimes barely noticeable, other times there is significant pain. You mentioned pain felt in the back- I went to ER for that too. Turned out to be esophagitis.
I was then also given Maalox to coat the area and I also have Rx Carafate that also coats the lining of your stomach. Has anyone talked to you about diet?
Eating less fatty foods etc. maybe you should contact your doctor’s office to go over what you should and shouldn’t eat.
Yeah we talked but diet the 1st time I was in the hospital for bleeds..thanks for the input appreciated the response😎
what are you afraid of? I have been the most fearful person you can imagine after losing 2 children, 1 husband to cancer, my home to fire, parents, then another husband.......when I figure out what I am afraid of it really helps my symptoms and helps me to calm myself.
Welcome to a great info site. Go to a GI doc for symptoms. Change your diet to Low Acid which means no spicy foods. No Italian, No Mexican, No fried, fatty foods or junk food snacks. No Soda, No booze, low acid coffee only, No lemons, limes, OJ, No tomato or vinegar based products. Melon and ripe bananas are OK. Eat chicken breast and baked fish. Eat Broccoli, spinach, Brussel sprouts. No peppers or pepper of any kind. I drink unsweetened almond milk which is alkaline. Non dairy, soy free, gluten free and is 1 carb per cup. Exercise more. Don't eat 3hrs before bed. Drink lot's of water. I also have gastrtis which I can't get rid of. My gerd is gone staying on this diet. I also do not eat out at fast food joint's. I hope this helps you out. This is what works for me.
Your diet, while quite restrictive has made a difference in your health, @riflemanz64! I congratulate you on your ability to make these modifications to your lifestyle in order to feel better.
Just wondering, do you take meds for your GI problems?
Yes PPI 40mg before supper of Pantaprazole but I can't get rid of the chronic gastritis.
There was no sign of Barretts on my last EGD so the diet got rid of it. I did lose 25# on this diet and am now 175#.
@sstone11 It is always good and very informative if you keep a log of what you eat and what happens afterward.. Only with that record can you and your doctor start to see a trend of these events... Keep a pen and pad where it is handy in the kitchen and another in the bathroom.. date and Breakfast Lunch Dinner .. snacks.. liquid consumed..... The time you take the medication can be helpful.. Not knowing your habits please be aware of the effects of alcohol and the meds you are taking..
I feel for you. Z couple of years ago I had terrible pain beneath the breastbone, was evacuated with oxygen to emergency room. Turned out it originated from GERD + a hiatus hernia. Afterwards I had a slew of cardiac tests, all negative thank heavens. I took omeprazole for a month, but it actually makes me feel worse, so didn't continue. What I've done since then is to work on my diet. A book by Dr. Jamie Koufman has helped me immensely - "Dropping Acid - The Reflux Diet Cookbook and Cure". Also Dr. Jonathan Aviv's "Acid Watchers Diet". Diet certainly is the key, and the idea of a food log mentioned here is excellent for pinpointing what is causing the trouble. Lots of luck!
