Constant Diarrhea and Flu Shot

Posted by suzanne2 @suzanne2, Oct 26, 2020

I have been doing pretty good with my microscopic colitis until I got my flu shot on Thursday. I was in bed by Saturday with all the symptoms of the flu. Today is better except for the uncontrollable diarrhea. I have been overdosing on Lomotil and am not getting my usual results. I have to teach kindergarten tomorrow and will be wearing extra protection! Any suggestions on how I can get this under control would be most appreciated!

I have found cutting out and dairy and sticking to clear fluids helps. That will be difficult for you as you need your energy to teach little ones I know!
Good luck, hope you get relief by tomorrow

@kathyoung thanks for the advice! I am actually drinking my cure all now of ginger ale, Vernors. May not help one thing but it helps my nauseated feeling. I have never had the residual of a flu shot last this long before. Usually a couple days and I feel better. This is crazy.

@suzanne2 I have Gastroparesis, so diarrhea and such is always a threat.. I take a super probiotic available at a national Drug chainstore.. also Gas X and I drink Pedialyte or its brand name electrolyte drink to keep hydration up... I do that most days... You might want to take those before going to bed as they need a little time to work and get things in order..

@suzanne2 The diarrhea causes loss of salts, especially potassium. Drink electrolyte liquids, Pedialyte or other brand of hydration liquid.. You will feel better.

Does anyone else use apple juice to stop diarrhea? I discovered it when my kids were little and now use it myself for IBS.

@stefspad - Applejuice in moderate amount probably is ok, applesauce too. It’s the pectin in apples or the apple peel that works. Kaopectate has pectin. Actually, I don’t know if the older form exists. Lately, the products called Kaopectate have same ingredients as PeptoBismol.

The BRAT diet (for a short period of time) is also recommended for diarrhea. B stands for bananas, R stands for rice, A stands for applesauce and T stands for toast.

Here is some information from HealthLine.com regarding the BRAT diet. The article states that this should be used for just a short period of time and should of course include sports drinks that are electrolyte liquids. This article also describes a bland diet and examples of foods that can be used as well.
