Shuf, how long have you had diabetes? Is it type 1 or type 2 diabetes?
Hello @shuf
I would like to add my welcome to you for joining Mayo Clinic Connect. I found some additional information on Buerger's Disease on Mayo Clinic's website. https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/buergers-disease/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20350664
In this article, there are also some suggested treatments mentioned such as intermittent compression of the legs, meds, etc. There appear to be different ways that Buerger's Disease is diagnosed. If you don't mind sharing more, how was this diagnosed in your situation?
Hi, I have type 2 diabetes. Not being able to get it right! On several different med. Metformin, junava , trulicity, glibiside. My burgers was diagnosed recently with doubled test and c.t. With contrast. Have not had a second opinion yet. Heart dr. Says i have 30% of blockage. I have neuropathy as well. Feet stay extremely cold and hurt alot. Both feet are affected but right is worse plus entire right leg.
Iv e been a diabetic for about 15 years. Sugar stayed constant till 2014 when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I am now 5 years out on cancer and off all med. Radiology only for cAncer. I do smoke! I am wondering if I should get second opinion on buergers . That test was Doppler test. Lol typing is bad. I am 65 years old. On lyrica and cymbalta for neuropathy. Extreme pain! Wearing ankle compression socks right now.and taking trental now also. Woo many med!!! Walking 30 min. A day as well.. Last A1C 7.9
Hello again @shuf,
I don't know if you read the Mayo Clinic article from the link I sent you in my post yesterday, but the first recommended treatment is smoking cessation. Here is the information.
"Smoking cessation. Although no treatment can cure Buerger's disease, the most effective way to stop the disease from getting worse is to quit using all tobacco products. Even a few cigarettes a day can worsen the disease.
Your doctor can counsel you and recommend medications to help you stop smoking and stop the swelling in your blood vessels. You'll need to avoid nicotine replacement products because they supply nicotine, which activates Buerger's disease. There are non-nicotine products that you can use.
Another option is a residential smoking cessation program. In these programs, you stay at a treatment facility, sometimes a hospital, for a set number of days or weeks. During that time you participate in daily counseling sessions and other activities to help you deal with the cravings for cigarettes and to help you learn to live tobacco-free."
Which of these smoking cessation attempts have you tried so far?
None, I am just starting with this diagnosis and plan to get a second opinion. Learning about this issue.😕
Hi @shuf,
Did your doctor make you aware of the need to stop smoking in order to control this disorder?
Yes, I am in the process of getting a second opinion at Vanderbilit vascular clinic. I need more information to make life changes.
Please keep in touch, @shuf. I'd be interested in hearing how you are doing. Is your appointment at Vanderbilt coming up soon?
Went to Vanderbilt for second opinion. No buergers disease! Issue is my neuropathy,so I will find a new dr. To address this issue.
