Safer and better is a "Maintainer"! Does the same as a trickle charger but has a safety feature that shuts off when the battery is fully charged! A trickle charger if not checked can over charge the battery and ruin it.

Yes, we found out his 25-35-45? year-old trickle charger is not up to the task, and he bought a new one. We have a battery maintainer in the garage (somewhere) but I am thinking it is at least 20 years old (from when we had kids parking in the driveway) and we should get a new one to put on. As a temporary solution we are alternating driving errands between my beloved 42 mpg Prius and his not so thrifty Subaru.
