Correlation between increased neuropathy pain and fluid retention?

Posted by iceblue @iceblue, Apr 8, 2020

My feet were on fire pretty much the entire day yesterday, and I could not figure out why. Then at some point I realized I was retaining fluid and found myself wondering if fluid retention in some way impacts neuropathy pain levels. Does anyone know if there is a correlation between fluid retention and neuropathy pain?

@darlingtondoll . I didn't know Lyrica would do that , I do take Tramadol have since my fracture in 05 when I need it for the pain otherwise a Aleve will help for the most part . Most night I dont have trouble sleeping but there are those times when nothing I take helps . I do soak my feet in Epsom salts which help befoe I go to bed .

Lyrica made my hair fall out, even my eyebrows and eyelashes! It didn’t help the pain, so I got off it. I take Tramadol when my pain gets unbearable, but otherwise, I just take gabapentin, THC medical marijuana at night and tizanidine.

@darlingtondoll and @maryv449 - The Lyrica was working well, and it definitely eliminates the pain at night, but I won't take Tramadol. I can see that many people on this site like it, but my (multiple) attempts to take it were horrible. The last time I was given a prescription for it I returned almost a full bottle (likely more than 40) to the pharmacy for disposal. It makes me nauseous and doesn't touch my pain. If I could get a prescription for another painkiller I would ask for T3's, but suspect it will be a very long time before my new doctor will prescribe any for me.

I've been experiencing symptoms of neuropathy for more than a year. I have a certain amount of occasional discomfort but no real pain except if I get out of bed or out of my car the wrong way. During the last few weeks my feet, particularly my left foot has been swelling. More recently my mid-section has also been swelling. I can still wear shirts and shoes but wearing pants has been a challenge. I've been taking something called Water Away which helps. I also drink 64 ounces of water every day and I soak my feet several times a week. Would prescription diuretics cure my water retention problem or should plan to live with it for the rest of my life?

I had a slightly swollen ankle then feet and burning feet 3 months later the burning feet has stayed the same and swelling gone down. The leg pain got a little worse. Hard to say about connections probably just a bunch of junk proteins depositing willy nilly plugging up cell resperation causing a lack of nutrients and cell death.

Welcome @ckm4536, I've had neuropathy for over 20 years but don't have any pain, just the numbness and some tingling. I also have to wear compression socks due to swelling in my legs caused by lymphedema. There can be many causes for swelling in the legs and mid region. Here's some information on the topic:

Have you discussed the swelling with your doctor?

I visit my doctor annually to renew blood pressure prescriptions. About 5 years ago I mentioned to him that my toes crinkled occasionally. It was uncomfortable but not painful. On other occasions I had toes that would temporarily point in different directions. This was also uncomfortable but not painful. When I mentioned this to my doctor he said it was odd but gave me the impression it was nothing to worry about. What I had been describing to him were symptoms of neuropathy which he seemed to know nothing about. There is a neuropathy clinic in my area which I plan to visit before the end of the year. Right now, drinking water, taking the Water Away capsules and soaking my feet is helping and the swelling around my middle is decreasing. I'm not in pain and I can even spend an hour on my treadmill every day. All I really want to know right now is if it's possible to be rid this problem by taking prescription diuretic medications. I'll try the compression footwear. Thank you.

If you’re having fluid retention in only one extremity or part of an extremity and you’re also experiencing midsection swelling due to fluid retention your problem is more serious. You may have a blocked vein in your foot or a blocked urinary drainage tube between kidneys and bladder. You should seek medical attention sooner than later. If you have any additional illness like hypertension or diabetes please get checked now!

If you’re retaining fluid in your bladder it could possibly be pressing on your nerves that pass along and beside bladder? I have this in the morning when my body begins to stir from sleep. I fight to not get out of bed as my bladder gets fuller which causes me to get spasms down my legs. Getting up and doing what I need to stops the immediate pain but there is always residual pain too.

Since my last post the swelling in my feet has significantly decreased. I have been drinking eight (8) eight ounce glasses of water per day and my urine is more than 64 oz. per day. I feel no pain
whatsoever and the swelling in my mid-section has decreased. Although I've never had a problem like this before I have learned that it is common. I've been taking something called Water Away which has helped. My paternal great grandmother had to deal with swollen feet but I don't know when it started. There was no swelling in my right foot and only a little in my left yesterday. I've noticed that when I get up in the morning both feet look and feel completely normal. I always have plenty of energy and I spend an hour on the treadmill at 3 mph every day.

But repeated swelling is not normal and maybe try decreasing your water intake for a few days to see the effect. I hope you are counting your tea and coffee or soda I your fluid numbers too? With the exercise you’re doing which helps your circulation I’d be concerned about it! Does your doctor know you’re using Water Away and about your swelling?
