Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group
Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'
And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?
Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/
So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.
Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?
Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Count me in broke my back 2 yrs ago. No surgery. Getting very painful .used to go to the Y. But with covid and my health issues no way. Used to walk at leat 2 miles a day. I will do what I can.
@jakedduck1 Wow, Jake. A five mile swim. You deserved an ice cream bar! I took swimming lessons five times. Swam the length of the pool at last, without breathing or opening my eyes. The called me The Torpedoe! Lol.
Walked 1946 steps yesterday.
1.28 km Canadian! The weather has been great. 40 F, no wind, no rain.
It's sunny today. Going out there right after my insulin injection!!
Hello - from another Sue. The goal here is for each of us to do what we can, and to encourage each other. Some days I walk, others not so much. Like today -occupying myself in the house because it is 40F and raining. When I don't get out, I try to do an extra set of stretching exercises to keep the pain away in back, neck & shoulders.
Do you use any aid when you walk? Before hip replacement, I used a cane so I could lean when I hurt, but now I have too much arthritis to grip it. A friend of mine finds lightweight hiking poles helpful - he says a cane makes him lean to one side, and a walker makes him hunch over. I have only used them when mountain hiking in the past, but may give them a try again.

Welcome to the group. I fractured my back 15 years ago, the extensive surgery by a fabulous Mayo Dr and after a year I was walking at a fairly good pace. I hope that you continue to seek help. Walk whenever you can in your home, garage, driveway or whatever and be kind to yourself.
I just love it when I come onto this discussion! Everyone is encouraging and supportive and welcoming! We’re all exercising/walking/swimming/strolling to the candy store and we’re enjoying some great conversations!
My daylily and daffodil leaves were are popping their heads up this morning. But we’re due for a MAJOR snowstorm starting Friday. Amounts ranging from 3’ to 5’ and more! Guess I’ll have to get lots of walking in before! Maybe @jakedduck1 would stroll over and shovel my driveway. I could even make some cookies!
@suerc is this your first time with our virtual walking group? Welcome. Don’t compare yourself to any of the others—just do what you can. We’re all different and have different issues and abilities.

@becsbuddy Sounds lovely the flowers not the snow wow that a lot of snow Think you better get your walking in staying on with Hot Dark coca then
@becsbuddy
You'd have to bake a heap of cookies. Maybe if my supply runs short but that will take awhile. What, no snowblower? I only walked around the block twice. Better save my strength for the driveway.

@sueinmn I'm still loving my faithful walker. It's a beautiful day here today - 45 F, sunny, no wind. I walked 30 minutes, 2186 steps, 1.43 km, burned 84 calories. Love my new pedometer. It's very motivating. I have to admit, the walks are painful though. Knees and hips. I'm waiting for word from the hospital about x-rays requisitioned by my doc. I've heard it may be a six week wait.
Not sure if I should be walking so much right now with all this pain, but it's wonderful to escape the Covid isolation and relish the outdoors after a long cold winter! Happy trails. Limping Laurie lol
@artist01, Welll, it Is a lovely photo and party girl or no, I find your posts and interests much the same as mine and always a delight to read!
As for @jakedduck1, his response to you and not to mine with his whine about attempting to "stagger around the hood awhile to keep @becsbuddy" off his back is a sure indicator that he hadn't had his sweets quota for the day, right? Off the hook this one time Leonard but I'm keeping a list.
I'm off for a trek to a playa lake to feed some ducks and geese. With Spring and rising temps, they'll soon be laying eggs!
