Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Thanks for the thumbs up, @artist01!!
Yay to You for beating your long walk record yesterday as well!!

I think a pedometer would be motivating for me too but as I am still in the 20th century electronically, sigh, I'm just learning how to access games on my new smart phone. Anything more complicated, I'll leave to you much younger whipper snappers! VBG

Yup, with wind gales predicted here for the next few days, I may be forced to do some mundane task like thorough refrigerator cleaning. Maybe the promise of adding a few more plants to my initial nursery visit will prompt this "holding" action?

Doesn't Nature unnerstand that we are chomping at the bit to walk, be outside and play in the dirt????

@fiesty76 Hahaha, good luck cleaning that fridge! One can always hope your weather will break for the best BEFORE you have to start that miserable task!

Mother Nature certainly hasn't been cooperating for many of us so far, but Spring is in the air! One of my friends saw a Robin the other day, and in Canada, that's a sure sign that Spring is here. Those brave little birds usually have to endure at least one dump of snow if they've erred in returning to our northern climes too early.

Have a warm and cozy day @fiesty76!

Went for a wonderful walk today! Blue sky, no clouds, bright sun and temps in the 40’s when we went out. It actually got to 67* today!! But the ski slopes are as busy as ever. Beautiful walk but no buds coming up or green leafs showing. Oh well, there’s always tomorrow. Keep walking!

It occurred to me that we started walking a whole year ago. And we’ve been under masking and stay at home and social distancing orders forever! But we’re still walking and doing home exercises and swimming (and eating). Give yourselves a pat on the back! Now is also the time to find some of members who just kept right on walking. Where are you @lioness and @1065408 and @starko and @merpreb and @mayofeb2020 and @gingerw and @jakedduck1 ? Come walk with us!

@becsbuddy Great news that you had wonderful weather today for your walk, Becky. That makes a walk so much more special!
I was lucky today, too. I did 1548 steps with my newly downloaded pedometer, and the temp. was a balmy 45, with no wind or rain.
Love the pedometer. It's so motivating to get out there, and even to go further than planned, just to see how many steps I can register. I walked around the whole block as I had done yesterday, but then I walked around the perimeter of our building, just to rack up some more steps. 😊

@gingerw Ginger, I'm so sorry about your multiple myeloma diagnosis. I somehow, I suppose since I've been so self-involved recently, totally missed this news. Ginger, those MRI's can be tough. I've taken valium and xanax at different times and found it helpful, but did a lot of quoting poems or scripture or singing hymns in my head to make it through. I tend to tremors, so it's especially difficult to stay still and get good pictures. I have them play classical piano on the ear phones, fairly loudly. I've played piano since a child until ole' arthritis stopped my attempts, so this is really relaxing and helps my mind drift into good places. That's a wonderful improvement in these tests, but the noise and staying still make it tough. I'm so sorry you had to endure this. I hope by today you're feeling much improved.

You said you're wearing a back brace to help now. For you at this point, thank goodness it's winter and cold! Those things are horrid in the Florida heat and humidity!

Please keep us informed re your test results and treatment. I'm so fond of you, admire you so for your talents, creativity, stamina, strength, wisdom and good heart.....you're an important part of my new life with new connect friends. And true for sure for many others on these sites! You're special, lady, and I look forward to more goodies from you about your garden and crafts and art!

Blessings, elizabeth.

@gingerw Ginger, I'm thinking of you as you deal with your diagnosis of multiple myeloma. You've had to go through so much with all that testing, and your brave and stoic nature is very obvious in your posts.
My sincere wish is for your days to get easier with the passage of time.
Warmest regards,
Laurie

Not as warm here in WI but it was in 40’s and sunny! Got my walk with the two little dogs in. Saw lots of walkers and dogs. Several outdoor “driveway socials” happening with safe distancing observed. 😍 Plus I found my first clump of blooming snowdrops in my garden and a large flock of sandhills flew overhead, saw my first returning ones yesterday! Actually, I heard both groups before I saw them! Love the sound! Yay, spring! ❤️
