Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group
Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'
And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?
Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/
So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.
Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?
Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

We will be watching all of it. We are excited and hope the Chiefs win! @joybringer1
@jakedduck1, Big Congrats on checking the mileage around your intended route...laughing...did you then get out of the car and take some steps on your own??? Really glad to hear you'll be "stepping out to join us walker/cizers".. Will there be a couple of candybars in your pockets for added stimulus? I'm not about to walk for distance, just for a set number of minutes and still working to increase those by 5 mins ever so often. Hope you'll let us know about your first completed walk-a-thon. My first was making it around our very long block. Yup, those stories of parents' early feats make me wonder if they were part of my Texas Tall Tale Clan??? Smiles
Yes, it really is "too cold to walk" - windchills below -10F keep me inside looking out except for dire necessity! And it's been that here since Friday afternoon. Fortunately I am occupied working on a big project for my Master Gardener group and a little one for my grandsons, so except for stepping out one the deck to add seed to the birdfeeders, I am hunkered down inside. Will put a pot of soup on for the game tonight.

@jude07 You had me openly laughing with your “hamster in my own home” comment! I can totally get that vision as the past few days have us trapped inside too. I love winter but a walkeze outside isn’t happening! It’s brutal out there today with a -22 and windchill of -40. So, there’s exercise on the treadmill or elliptical bike, though often I still grab a book or iPad and do the hamster thing through the house. I make a circuit through the rooms, run up and down the stairs for about 45 minutes. Good for you, keeping up with your exercises! It’s so important for us to keep on moving! What are your favorite floor exercises? Do you target specific areas? My floor exercise routine focuses on core, hips, back and arm muscles. Really has made a difference in my overall feeling of well being! Lori.
Glad to hear from another indoor exerciser. I do similar to you on step reps and focus on the same when it come to my body. I use weights (not to heavy) and stretch band and then add five yoga exercises to it. I try to change it up some so I don’t get too board since I don’t have any equipment to add to my routine. Keep it up! We will get through this!!
@jakedduck1 HI Leonard! Just checking in on you to see if you got sidetracked on your way to school! How long is that new walking circuit? Brrrr, where I live, walking won’t be outside today. It truly IS the proverbial minus 22 degrees, trudging through deep snow, blinding sun... I’m a tough old bird but -40 windchill still manages to get through my down parka! I’d really like to check on the game cams as I see interesting tracks on the snow. But that requires snowshoes as the drifts are waist high to get to the cams. (Uphill both ways, LOL ) Were you able to get out walking the past few days? Even if it’s not to the school and back. We have to keep movin’
I see @fiesty76 is checking in on you too. See, inquiring minds want to know. Haha
Hi Lori. Just checking in to say I'm on Day 5 of my Baby Walking Program. I even walked in the rain on Day 2! The first day I only walked 8 minutes and felt weak and wimpy, but by Day 2, I was feeling so much stronger and walked for 13 minutes. I'm hoping to increase my time and distance on a weekly basis. Amazing how my stamina has improved in such a short time. My blood pressure has been running high, but seems to be 20 points lower in the last 2 days. Maybe that good number will continue. Not sure if it's just a short-lived fluke, but one can always hope! Happy walking, everyone! My best, Laurie
Oh dear! I am not that motivated by indoor exercise. I tend to hunker down - have spent all week at my computer doing a big project, but I do get up every hour, stretch, warm my tea & move around. Lori - you're right - even the old Air Force parka doesn't stand up to this windchill. My husband got a great gift from our daughter & son-in-law - a battery operate warming vest - that he has gotten much use from this winter - especially because his workroom is the cold spot in our house, and we play out with the littles. Not today or tomorrow though - we'll be jumping, dancing and hopping in the playroom!

You are taking amazing baby steps in the right direction, we are out here with praises for your progress. Keep it up!!
I have heard those heated vests are nice, can you share the brand name?
