Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group
Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'
And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?
Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/
So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.
Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?
Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@sueinmn, What a joy to have your two little guys join you...maybe not the same muscle workout but can almost guarantee more smiles, yes?
@sabine66,Thank you. It was fun to have him along for awhile...would have been nice to have him come home with me too but I know his family and my Precious would have objected strenuously...and rightfully so! Smiles

I walked 3600 steps Friday before I weirded out & 1100 steps today, not far but as the physical therapist says “any movement is better than none.” Today I probably spent more time on the ground than walking. I had to have a blood test Friday and today and the lab technician walked me to my car because my balance was so bad. I explained to him that my balance was always bad and I’m always falling but he insisted. I wish the pretty blonde had walked me out instead of the guy, I’ll wait for the girl next time in case I am wobbly of course with my luck she’ll probably go get the guy and have him walk me out again.
Jake
@jakedduck1 You men all alike .Hope she will next time Any movement is good
@fiesty76 How are you ? Did the hurricane affect you any? Thought of you today.
@jakedduck1 Hi Leonard - do you use any walking aids to help? When I had long-term vertigo, I walked with 2 hiking poles & cut my number of falls by a lot. I also figured out they gave me a bit of upper body workout, so I usually use them once or twice a week on my daily walks - will begin again when my thumb is stronger.
Please take care, falls can be very dangerous.
Sue
@jakedduck1.. Be careful Jake, if you fall, the guy may have to give you mouth to mouth, oh, I get it, that's why you want the young blonde to walk you out!!
@jakeduck1 Since my surgery i use a walker, so if you are off balance it would help or you could use Sue's suggestion. I don't need the walker inside the house, but if you are off balance in the house a walker is great.
@sueinmn
I used a cane and even fell with a walker and while hugging walls and furniture. I’m much better today. Don’t feel wobbly today, although I don’t go in a straight line either.
I don’t care what may be causing this as long as it’s not my epilepsy. What makes me uncomfortable Is there is a type of Epilepsy where seizures manifest themselves with dizziness although it is usually from the temporal lobe but it can be caused by the frontal lobe which is where my seizures normally originate.
Probably won’t go walking today just in case.

What a frightening thought. One I’m eager to get out of my mind FOREVER!! Your statement just goes to show things could always be worse.
