Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group
Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'
And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?
Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/
So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.
Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?
Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@fiesty76. What an adventure! Almost like Alice in Wonderland! I remember the first time I went out to Trader Joe's. I cased the parking lot to see how many cars were there first. Fully masked up and gloves on my hands, I clutched my shopping list like it was my mother's pearls. I called the store to find out when is a good time to go, even though I went at senior hour, I saw some who are obviously younger. It was high anxiety for me. Some of my grocery stores like Ralph's and Sprouts have curb side pick up. You order what you want online, drive to the store, text them at designated parking space. Then you pop the trunk and they load the grocery in. No muss no fuss. Do any of your stores do that?
I hope you have recovered by now, looking forward to hearing about your next trip. Hugs!
Thanks for the explanation, @fiesty76. Please see your private messages. Even here in northern parts walking has to be done in the early hours of the morning. Temperatures persist in the mid 90s during the day. I’m grateful for an oversized apricot tree that gives a glorious umbrella of shade on the back deck all day long. While I live in an urban setting, I have discovered that a pair of red-tailed hawks has given birth to young one. They don’t seem to mind the heat as I seem them giving flying and life lessons in the mid-day heat. Ours will be a stay-cation this year. No travel to the lake cabin. I’m grateful that nature has come to me this year.
Where do your walks take you these days?
@lioness @fiesty76 I think I can join your virtual walking. I can do only 3 blocks, but that's good since it's after my surgery. They want us to walk. It's hot out and just a little breeze, but heat doesn't bother me. Hope both are you are doing good. Jeanie
@colleenyoung, I am so jealous! Forget the shade your lovely oversized apricot tree provides and is appreciated and tell us about any apricot harvests? I think apricots are truly God's best nectar and while my tree was lost several years ago due to borers which I didn't know to watch for, my neighbor's bumper harvest last spring had us gathering them early and late. They are our first early spring local fruit to bear and usually due to weather only make every year or two. When they do, it is a bonanza but a lot of work in the kitchen making preserves, fried pies and cobblers. Ahh, next spring cannot come too soon. Smiles
@mayofeb, How did you guess? My first name is "Alice" and our Jr. English teacher required us to write an autobiography. I used "wonderland" quotations to preface each of my chapters and still have that gingham bound album with a cover photo dressed also in gingham among my keepsakes.
Loved your description of clutching that shopping list like your mother's precious pearls...I can sooo relate! lol
Yes, Sprouts is a favorite mkt for fresh veggies, fruits, meats, fish, seafood and nuts. They did start a delivery service after I'd started using another regionally owned local supermarket which offered more of my favorite brands of other foodstuffs so I've continued with that one. We don't have a Ralph's but understand that WalMart, Sams and Costco here also offer curbside service.
Since I'm in the absolute minority by still using a primitive "flip phone", my ordering choices are more limited. Nope, still limp as a soggy stick of celery but thanks for asking! Think I'm up for making a smoothie and then looking for another easy dinner tonight. Take care and thanks for responding.
Thank you, @jude07. I think the anxiety of what I might experience was what truly exhausted me. And I appreciate your reminders of taking small steps especially because being an avid goal setter and list maker, I knew if not careful, the list would grow beyond manageable this first time out. When daughter asked what I bought, she actually complimented for not over-extending my list...this gal knows me far too well, right? Smiles
@lilypaws I’m glad you can join our virtual walks! And, after having such major surgery! I’m doing better at walking after a short hiatus. Went out to Twin Lakes , a paradise for dogs, near our house. Walking in the mornings is so wonderful!
@becsbuddy
good memories of Twin.Lakes in Pa Engaged there .
@becsbuddy, Next best thing to "being there", Becky, is enjoying this beautiful, tranquil photo of the Twin Lakes. Thank you for posting!
I may have to return to this for more moments of awe and comfort.
@fiesty76 Thank you fiesty76 I was hurting this morning across my low back L-4 and L5, wear I had the nerve being pinch and the surgeon had to do a lot of work to get the nerves unpinched. Remember my surgery was 9 hours. Yes, walking is what they want me to do, but I wonder if I went too far yesterday. I did 3 blocks. I'm going to see how I feel today and may just do 2 blocks. But my pain pills are taking some of the pain away.
I go to Mayo tomorrow and have my post-op visit with the surgeon.
