Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

You do what you can do. A positive attitude is worth more than anything. Don’t knock yourself out and listen to your body. Kids and 2 jobs post surgery? Be kind to yourself and eat well. All will come in time. What you don’t need is to overextend yourself and wind up being exhausted and lowering your resistance. Remember, good food is good medicine for your body and mind.

Stay safe and healthy

@athoub
Oh good grief 5 kids and 2 jobs! Give yourself a mini vacation every day with some alone time if you can. I think you take enough steps on a daily basis to still qualify as Superwoman and probably leading the pack in the virtual walking group.

Hi lioness,
Did the health dept. come to your apt bldg yet?
I think L.B. Must have their own health dept, as other health departments only go to institutions, or nursing homes With large number of infected people.
The news said your county had over 7 thousand new cases in 24 hours. What a scare.
Are you able to get out for fresh air?
Best to order in for everything.
I don’t go anyplace. Keeping busy with plenty of stuff.
Did you hear law enforcement will not ticket people who do not wear a mask. Guess they are busy with other things.
I know a few seniors who think masks are stupid. They are men.
Maybe if they get sick, their mind will change, infact one was dumb enough to say he hopes he gets a slight case. Thankfully conversation was on the phone, at his girlfriends house.
What comes to mind,no matter how many college degrees a person has, their brain still has a dumb stupid side.

@funcountess, Your post brought a smile. Sometimes the more degrees one holds, the less common sense they exhibit!

An acquaintance recently made the jaw dropping statement that "Covid-19 won't disappear until all the "herd" experience the virus and develop antibodies for immunity". Wonder if the dummy you mentioned and this person also believe that a woman can become "slightly pregnant" ???? vbg

Good questions for Lioness and I'm with you. I'm staying home and having groceries delivered. How I long for take-out but not giving into the risk. Kitchen duty is for sure a drag but if we continue to stay safe, this time will surely pass. We can do this; we can do this.

@fiesty76. Undiagnosed 30 lbs weight loss? That's alot of weight? Have you talked to your doctor about this? Is it due to the stress of the virus? I remember after I had the head on collision a few years back, I lost quite a few lbs because I could not eat or sleep due to the stress, and my doctor wanted me to see a therapist. Fortunately it got better. Take care of yourself, keep an eye on the weight.

@mayofeb2020, Thanks for your concern. The nausea and weight loss began a year ago January. Underwent many lab tests and scans but never given a medical diagnosis. Took far too many months to realize that the Metformin prescribed for pre-diabetes was the culprit. It was the only thing changed and I still wonder that my pcp didn't consider that in the beginning or along the way. My research was what did the trick...scary that the patient finds an answer the doc overlooked entirely. Stopping the metformin, seeing a dietitian and adhering to his wonderful combined meal plan for diabetes and kidney disease improved my lab numbers. The continuing difficulty is the challenge of now regaining weight that began long before the pandemic. However, while others report that they tend to overeat when stressed, I am one who loses my appetite when stressed. I do prepare healthy meals and force myself to eat but the pandemic has not been a friend for this issue.

@lioness, Will keep my fingers crossed for Humana. My plan is through a state retired teachers' group but will let you know if masks show up! Looking forward to the ordered masks from Etsy...Might feel so fancy that I'll be "forced" to drive to a park to show them off...while distancing of course!!! Smiles Keep taking those extra precautions in your bldg. We need you so stay safe and healthy!

@rosemarya This morning i was out chopping blackberry vines and dead madrone. The large cart my husband fashioned for me took off down the hill, even after I blocked a wheel. How dare it! Down the hill, staying on the sidewalk til hitting the corner, then off into gutter and spill contents. It's a dead end street, so no issue of getting into traffic. What to do? Make lemonade! Uprighted the cart and continued my chopping down there. It was already 1.5 hrs into my 2 hr shift limit. Boy, was it a long and steep hike back up. More gutter cleanup and weeding tomorrow in the early morning coolness.

@gingerw, Ahh, sounds like we have a new lady gladiator on the scene! Your story reminds me of hubby's and my first golf lesson and attempt at the game at a FL resort decades ago. We had parked the golf cart on a hill and were attempting to hit balls when the cart came loping down the hill and upended in a pond! Talk about humiliation!! We never got the hang of golf and never again rented a cart either. lol

Hi, all. I confess, I didn’t go for a real walk today. I had my rituxan infusion this morning and then decided I’d better take it easy. Poor excuse! But, tomorrow’s another day! Sounds like everyone is doing very well! Promise I’ll try!

@becsbuddy, Now friend, while we all thank you for being the originator of this fun walking/cizer group, did you forget that medical procedures always take precedence over a day's usual walk??? Smiles I'm behind on posts so hope the following days found you feeling better and that you were able to resume your usual walking schedule ?
