Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group
Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'
And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?
Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/
So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.
Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?
Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

I live up in the California mountains with only one incorporated town in the entire county. The gas station on the main road had a sign "locals only" for several weeks as we are flooded in the summer with hunters and fishermen from all over including Arizona and Nevada. Locals are worried about the virus being imported from these "hot spots. Our population doubles in the summer. In town it's a mixed bag with some stores demanding the wearing of masks, others have seniors only hours and some seem to be open as if things were normal. Being old with respiratory issues I'm trying to be careful but sometimes I forget and shake hands with golfers visiting our local golf course from every hot spot in the country. I promptly use hand sanitizer but realize we are all rolling the dice every time we go out. From what I observe it seems that democrats follow our state governors advise, and increasingly forceful command, to wear a mask and republicans seem to follow the president and don't mask up. Social distancing is easier up here as there are fewer people and there are only 9 cases reported in the entire county. I only go to town (population 17,500 and 30 miles away) once a week for groceries on a senior day, where some stores have seniors only hours in the morning, visiting Safeway, Walmart, the local drug store and scurrying back up the mountain to the lake as fast as possible. The 1918 pandemic took a while to reach every where but it did and this one will too. Let's not get complacent as so many seem to be doing. As you mentioned we too have a few stores handing out masks or selling them at the door to encourage their use. Many people are trying their best to follow medical advice and stay safe. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for all of us.
Fiesty76,
Looks like your governor G. Abbott is going to halt further opening of businesses due to cov19 in your state of Texas. Maybe you will rest easier. Best to just stay in and away from people, especially those who do not wear a mask. Try and keep busy at your home. This virus is not going away anytime soon.
Stay safe,

I smiled at " scurrying back up the mountain"

@lioness Send some of that fairy dust my way. I'm pretty uncomfortable today after the 9 hour surgery on the 9th. I have to wear my brace very tight and stand up with a good posture. I have a cut from T-10 to my pelvis, which seems to be healing. It's going to take a long time (1 year) to totally heal. Hope your back is better. Jeanie
Hi lioness,
Did the health dept. come to your apt bldg yet?
I think L.B. Must have their own health dept, as other health departments only go to institutions, or nursing homes With large number of infected people.
The news said your county had over 7 thousand new cases in 24 hours. What a scare.
Are you able to get out for fresh air?
Best to order in for everything.
I don’t go anyplace. Keeping busy with plenty of stuff.
Did you hear law enforcement will not ticket people who do not wear a mask. Guess they are busy with other things.
I know a few seniors who think masks are stupid. They are men.
Maybe if they get sick, their mind will change, infact one was dumb enough to say he hopes he gets a slight case. Thankfully conversation was on the phone, at his girlfriends house.
What comes to mind,no matter how many college degrees a person has, their brain still has a dumb stupid side.

@fiesty 76 Wow! What a great photographer you are and I loved the pictures. Looks like you were taking care of some? Jeanie
@lilypaws . I wish I had the answer to these pains but the only thing I do is rest and take my Tramadol 50mg when it is bad also a heating pad . Its a miracle how a hot shower helps with the pain. I do use muscle rubs like Dr. Blue I think it has some Emu oil in it that is good Have your husband get some for you or you can order online that is the safer thing to do at this point in our history
@lioness, I understand the elevator ride of energy up and down all too well! Wish we could just press the "up" button when we can't seem to get beyond the "ground floor". Just a quick around the block walk this morning because I'd dug 5 holes in one area to transplant some liriope, (monkey grass) and wanted to get it in and watered before it became too hot. Fairy Dust accepted here anytime!!!!
@lioness and @mayofeb2020, Yes, weather is still a natural event none of us can control but can cause so much fear and destruction. The virus, on the other hand, while still out of control in some areas and becoming more so in some others, is something we can at least take some precautions against. Merry, I can't remember if you are in TX? We are 200,000+ in my area and the numbers for infections and hospitalizations grow daily. Absolutely just my own opinion but I think the rapid increase here is that people started flooding areas with crowds, no distancing and not wearing masks. I understand how copped up we all have felt but elected officials here have stated they will not enforce the recommendations and so people feel they have carte blanche to do as they please. So discouraging for those of us who continue to "follow the rules".
@docktort123 Welcome to our very chatty walking/exercise group. Looks like this is your first time on Connect. It must be so much cooler in the mountains! Are you going to walk/exercize with us? We would love to have you!
