Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Still out here and enjoying following the group. Haven’t reported walking minutes because they are way low due to lung condition. Continue to do what I can while enjoying the walkers chatter. Keep walking!!

@1065408, Glad to meet you! I saw a lot of walkers yesterday, perhaps we crossed paths! I enjoy my quiet walks now since my local girlfriends have quit walking for a variety of reasons. When I see them occasionally, they will say, "Are you still walking? I should really be walking....." I also enjoy the friendly chatter of this virtual group.
I commend you for your continued walking effort with a lung condition. Does the heat and humidy further compound your breathing?

@rosemarya nice to meet you as well. The heat and humidity does impact breathing. Honestly there appears to be no rhyme or reason to when or why in my case. Sometimes the most perfect of weather days is not perfect for me. Given up trying to figure it out. Allergy season and the pollen don’t help either. All we can do is keep moving as best we can. Happy walking!

I am happy to share that I have started my morning walks again! I have walked Tue, Wed, and Thurs. And each day have increased my distance and taken it slowly and cautiously as I don't want to overdo it. I have enjoyed the fresh quiet mornings with the birds chirping and even heard the across-town train whistle.
My foot pad looks like a fingerless glove for toes, and my chubby big toe was being pinched because it was too tight. So I picked out the seam, and resewed a new seam allowing for a wider big toe.
Today is saved for yard work. I have a new battery powered weed-eater to break in while hubby mows the grass.

@rosemarya, Great that you are able to be out for those morning walks again! I have an electric with long, long extension cord for the alley weedeating. Have been contemplating a battery powered one. Are you pleased with yours? Is it fairly light weight?

@lioness You should be ok on zoom if you are just using it for exercise. Your son probably knows about thoses nasty people out there that can get information. They wouldn't care about your exercises. Good for you for exercises. I will have to get back to doing them once I am healed. I have gained 12 pounds. Just sitting my computer and not exercising
I'm getting anxious about my surgery now, but yet excited to get it over with. I'm concerned how my husband is going to take care of me. He's 69 and works full time out of our house, he does Cyber Secrity (sp) I use to be able to spell real good, but going through the pain in my body seems to effect my mind too.
Back to my husband, he is a good man, but was raised with a very verbal agressive father. My husband was verbally abusive to our kids as they were growing up and to me too. I just didn't know and thought is was normal. He is better now, but has a problem with cleanliness. Every thing needs to be done his way, but he cares and loves me. He is better about not being abusive. He is very intellegent sp. I am outgoing and he is not. I'm just thankful for having him to help me get through this. Don't e-mail me again till June 13th. I should be home from the hospital on the 12th. I will tell you how it went. You are one of my special people. You are so positive and I have to keep that way too. I always get anxious before a trip and then once I'm packed and in the car I feel better.
Many Blessings to you. Jeanie

Good morning! Looks like a perfect day here! Going for a walk as soon as I get organized. Here’s a message from my granddaughter Zoe who says “let’s go!”

I took my first walk of the day right after coffee - in a very brisk wind, so I cut it a little short. That's OK though, when I need a second short walk, I can usually persuade my husband to join me.

This week, I'm trying something new - my fitness tracker also records whether I get up and move every hour - my goal is to do so at least 10 hours in each day. Last week, I got my steps in an average of 8 hours every day.

My husband and I have a hilly climb in back of our house through beautiful woods. It was so gorgeous yesterday, the birds were singing and flowers were doing their best to open up their buds. Today is the same! I've also lost 7 lbs! I have changed my diet since isolating and it's worked!
